  • A Beloved Series Comes to an End

No, I'm not talking about Lost. I tried to watch it during the first season, but lost interest and never gave it a second thought. Nay, the end has come for Law and Order. Tomorrow's episode will serve as both the 20th season finale and the series finale.

The thing that sucks about it is that no one knew it was the end. The actors, the producers, the writers, no one. NBC just arbitrarily decided that it was over a week ago. 20 years, and then poof. No last hurrah, no lovingly crafted climactic sendoff, no tear-jerking final fade to black, nothing. That's a pretty low blow to everyone who worked so hard on this show for so long. Yeah, there's a new spinoff (Law and Order: Los Angeles) coming in the fall, but with the core series suddenly declared dead they could call it "Random New Crime Drama" if they wanted to.

Maybe NBC doesn't want people to watch anymore. They've always had a habit of killing off good shows in favor of stupid crap or a new show no one will watch anyway, but this just seems inexcusable and, frankly, really fucking prickish. Lost has been on for six seasons and the series finale has been constantly promoted for months. In the meantime, some of us practically grew up on Law and Order and we get nothing whatsoever? Not to mention the fact that its cancellation has already been so grossly overshadowed by the media frenzy surrounding Lost that I'm betting most people won't even know about it until they notice it not on the schedule in the fall.

I wish they would at least have a L&O finale or closure thing, or a series ending the whole thing, too.

I didn't even know L&O was done until I read this thread. Then again, I don't usually watch NBC, I just watch some of the shows on Netflix (like L&O, Heroes, Lost) or record them and watch them later on without commercials.

That really sucks. I'm excited to see the end of Lost, but they really should have done something big for L&O, too.

Would Law & Order really benefit from an official finale? The show's structure doesn't seem suited to having one.

There was a thread on this in Check it Out last week. I was thinking something similar, that at least they don't have a lot of loose ends to tie up, since most episodes are self-contained and they don't get into the main characters' personal lives too much (at least not on the original; SVU and CI do).

But it would be nice to have some sort of send-off (maybe Jack McCoy retires or something and they do something big).

Not that I've watched in quite a while.

I stared at the TV in utter SHOCK when I saw the news. It was very hard not to throw my glass at it.

On the plus side, they're coming up with a Law&Order:Los Angeles.

Makes me wonder if they're run into some NCIS agents.
