  • playing D&D Online ?

    Hi

Ok I know that there are quite a few D&D players on this board so I thought I'd send out a call for advice

I've never played D&D before, although I have always wanted to, and I pretty sure I would enjoy it. My questions are: 1) are there places online where one can play D&D via chat room or message board format? 2) Are these places accepting of newbs who don't really know the finer points yet?

any additional advice would be great too

    thanks

They sure are! Several places in fact.

I sometimes run a online game, I have my own messageboard for it, but none of my players use it, so I just make take it off.

Giantitp.com has a roleplaying forum where several people start new games on the boards there of various games, and alot are very accepting of new players.

Also, candlekeep has a board that can do the same.

However, it really based on what type of DnD you want to play. Wizards.com is dominated by fourth edition players, which I personally don't like. I play 3rd edition. Alot of people here play that, or 2nd edition.

If you tell me more of what kind of game you think you enjoy more, I can really help. Do you want to have futuristic games in space but still have swords (not talking about Star Wars so don't worry), or do you want large stories that are more about talking and solving mysteries over slaying orcs, or do you want to wave through hordes of creatures slaying them and taking their stuff, do you want lots and lots of magic or low low magic.

Please, ltitle more details. Id' love to help.

      Plaidman you rock!

For the type of DnD, I would like something along the lines of the Forgotten Realms type of games ( not necessarily FR specifically but that style ) Modern era or Futuristic scenarios don't really interest me at this point

For type of gameplay I think I would enjoy something with lots of story, and that would ease me into playing.

as for the rules, honestly it's all greek to me so whatever is most widely used and easier to pick up works for me

I mostly want to learn how to play before jumping in with both feet

      Thanks again for your help

enworld.org is another great place to look for games, get advice, learn about all kinds of stuff, and just be generally amused. It's basically the biggest, awesomnest online roleplaying community there is.
My webcomic is called Sidekick Girl. Val's job is kinda like retail, except instead of corporate's dumb policies, it's the Hero Agency, and the SC's are trying to take over the world.

I would suggest that you either decide which edition of the rules you want to play, and pick up a players handbook of that edition to read up on, or contact a group, and find out what edition they are playing and then pick up said book. I would probably do the later, only because you may end up getting them mixed up.

You will need to study quick to pick up what you can do though. Once you decide on which edition, and get hold of a book, you can decide on what class you want to play, and then concentrate on that section of the book so you know what you can do. After that, you can study other parts of the game.

Since you do not know the rules, it would be best not to contaminate your viewpoints with my own views on the different editions. I'll just say that I still play 2nd edition, but have fooled around a bit with 3rd and 4th but never really played much of either.

Remember, the biggest part of playing any role-playing game is that it's a massive game of "let's pretend." You pretend to be your character, breathing life into the numbers as you play.

Last but not least, have fun with it, and don't let bad experiences get you down. It's only a game.

Also, if you like the D20 rules, look over the Pathfinder game. My group likes it better than the 3.5 revision, and there are a lot of people picking it up recently.

KabeRinnaul and I try to run games off his forums (we and some friends keep trying off and on to run different games at any given time but life, she is what she is...) and you'd be welcome to join in. We run a 3.5/Pathfinder mix at this point.

Thanks for all the help !!

I've heard Pathfinder mentioned ALOT in the last few months I'll have to look into it later.

How does one play D&D on a message board? I'm a bit fuzzy on the mechanics of it all

The fact that it's all a big game of let's pretend is alot of fun for me I'd like to play with a group who get into their characters with lots of interaction and stuff

                again thanks people

Basically, you simply post what your character is doing from one point to another. It's not much different than playing while sitting around a table, just not as fast. You relate what your character is doing, and your GM (Game Master, also Dungeon Master, depending on preference) lets you know the result.

I've been playing around with the forum software available to me on my new domain, thinking of starting a game of my own.
