I had DSL at my last place through Verizon. Moved a couple weeks ago and just got cable set up through Cablevision/OptOnline. And.. wow. Just wow. The service is awful. I'm probably going to try and cancel and go back to DSL. DSL was faster.

The fastest download speed I've gotten on the cable was 0.8mb/s, and in the evenings forget it, you can't even load Yahoo or Google's main page before it times out. I tried to download a 1.7mb file on iTunes last night and it estimated 39 hours. For those who play WoW, I only managed to get past the login without d/cing once and saw epic latency of 62,000, higher than I believed was even possible. The plan we have is supposed to be 15mb/s.

Internet searches suggest that this is just due to the area being massively oversold (NYC metro area) and that this is the case in this region. Multiple classmates with the same provider confirm that they can rarely even get into their email between 6pm and midnight. And they're the only cable provider in the area, so it looks like we're going back to DSL and just losing the $50 setup fee.

So for those who wondered why I've been absent lately... that'd be why.

I can't tell you the number of times I've bitched about Cablevision. HATE. HATE WITH A PASSION.

Make sure you can get it before you cancel your service, though. I don't have access to a line at my apartment, and the store is BARELY at the edge of the line. So our service is kinda crap and constantly cuts out.

Not to mention they massively screw up the wiring.

Frankly, the only decent service in the metro area is Time Warner, and even THEY are crap.






Is there a good ISP out there? Anywhere? Anyone? Bueller?

Well, if you don't mind having an internet connection that's slow as a turtle then you can always go dial-up. It's super cheap now...lol. I have Verizon DSL & I LOVE IT!!

Time Warner doesn't service my area. =( My roommate suggested we get a T1 line. I reminded him that we're broke artists.

I suspect we'll be going with the boosted version of Verizon DSL.

Yeah. The only part of LI served by TW/RR is Queens. And even then, not all of the borough, with part of the Elmwood/Glen Oaks region not served. Which I never really understood, because, well, that means the TW lines are crossing the Cablevision lines, since Queens is BETWEEN Nassau and Brooklyn.

This thing with Cablevision feels *remarkably* stupid. "Hey, let's install service with almost no capacity in an area with some of the highest population density in the country! Sounds like a plan!"

I loved having Fios but the new place isn't wired for it. After having some serious problems with Cox the last time that I used them I refused to go back so DSL is pretty much our only option at the new place, that or satellite which costs more for slower service. I figure that I was treated pretty well by Verizon while I had Fios that hopefully I will have a similarly positive experience with their DSL, if not quite so fast.

The local company here is just that, local. It's pricy as hell - $86/month for fairly basic cable (no box or DVR) and mid-range internet. But I've always had good service from them, and only two short-term outages in two years.
