  • any jewlers out there?

so i have a simple band of 12 diamonds set in white gold as an engagement ring. i like simple.
a year and a half ago, my grandmother passed and my mom got her wedding ring and gave it to me. the engagement band is a pretty big diamond flanked by two smaller stones. the wedding band is 4 diamonds in a row, each about the size of my diamonds. both of these are set in white gold.
my mom has cancer and now has a 2ish year life expectancy. she wants to give me her wedding ring. her engagement ring is a diamond (smaller than her mothers) and 3 even smaller stones (smaller than mine) and her engagement ring is just a band. all yellow gold.
she has a pretty cool idea: take my grandmothers and her wedding rings and combine them to make a beautiful 3 generation wedding ring for me.

...i have no idea how to go about doing this. any suggestions?

well its been a while since ive actually made real metal jewelry but i would think you would find a jeweler in your area who you know has a good rep and design something. Personally i would do a band made from the white gold from one of your grandmothers ring. use one of the yellow gold rings to make a decoration like a gold heart or make a yellow gold inset. then mount three stones about the same size on it or two smaller stones and one big one the two small ones to represent your grand ma and mom the big one to represent you.

You could keep your mother engagement ring (or did you mean wedding ring the one with the stones is the one i mean) and keep your grandmothers wedding mostly intact and use the parts from the plain band and grandmas engagement ring for the family ring. this way you could also have pieces that are of value emotionally and financially to hold on to of these to women.

But most Jewelers would be able to tell you your opitions better than me
i only worked in silver lol.

Aren't some jewelers also designers? Couldn't you go and meet with someone and see what they come up with and also get a price cost at the same time?

Did your engagement ring come from a jewelry store in the area? You could start there. If they don't have a designer to help you, they can probably recommend someone.

Also, figure out what you can afford to spend on this before you start working with anyone.

Find a good jeweler. They generally won't be at the mall. Ask people for recommendations. A good jeweler will give you ideas and keep it within your budget. My fiance went to the jeweler with The Ugliest Ring Ever (a random ring from my grandmother), two things I insisted on in a ring and a really vague idea of what he wanted. He ended up with a set that is perfect for me and was right within his budget.

Also remember that you can keep those rings for any children that come along.

My grandmother's wedding set is now on my sister's finger. My fiance and I will be resetting my mom's ring as a wedding band, and then using the proceeds from a (rarely-used) diamond bracelet for the engagement band.

Also, something to remember in regards to gold - it scratches easily. If you have a highly physical job, consider a sturdier material (maybe have it in a spiral or braided design with the metals from the other rings) as the base, then incorporate the stones.

You mention that the smaller stones are mostly the same size - what about setting them into what would essentially be an eternity ring (diamonds all the way around the band), and using the larger stones as the engagement band? The largest being the centre, and the slightly smaller ones being the side stones.

Any way you can take photos so we can see them and offer other ideas?

Also, make sure you get them all individually appraised before having *any* jeweler, no matter how highly-rated, take them for re-making. And keep those papers in a safe deposit box, separate from the rings.
