Building up my geek points!!

A local theater is having a special Sunday Afternoon matinee. It's a double feature of Dr Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog in its entirety followed by the movie Serenity!

Now I'm a proud geek, but I have never seen Serenity or Firefly ( I know shocking) So I got my hands on a copy of the series and I plan to start watching it later today.

Is watching the series must in order to enjoy the film?
Are there any little tie-ins or running gags/jokes I should look out for?

Personally I don't care if I read any spoilers so don't be shy

I had to watch Serenity like 5 times before i manged to get through it - not because its a difficult movie to get into, just that it kept getting put on at times when i was already couch-zombie bait and i would pass out - its kinda is both a prequel and and the wrap up all at once, so no you don't have to watch the series to enjoy the movie, I have yet to start on the series, but it is an awesome movie!
