  • Liquid food (medical)

This week I'm getting my impacted wisdom teeth pulled out(yay!). But I've been told that I would have to have food in a liquid form.

Any tips on what I can make or have? I was told mashed potatoes was one and baby food, aside the jello

I had four impacted wisdom teeth taken out and I could eat solid food. Granted, it had to be soft food, but you can still chew. Jello and soup are good, potatoes, anything you can use your tongue to help mash up. You needn't go on a liquid diet.

First thing: straws are evil. Even when using a spoon, be careful not to "slurp" too much and cause suction. Suction = dry socket = trip to ER in pain and heaving

I ate baked potatoes and mac and cheese (with the noodles a bit overcooked so as to be extra mushy). Soup/broth are also good, especially if you're prone to nausea from the anesthesia or pain meds. I'm assuming they'll be knocking you completely out since they're impacted.

I also had Fudge Rounds/Oatmeal Cream Pies because they're soft and Mom could just leave a pile next to me and not have to worry about fetching me something all the time.

Some other tips: Ice Packs. It's a huge PITA to keep them on all the time, but it will really help with the swelling. Your doc will give you the specifics on gauze, when to take it out, saline rinses, and, the most fun, when your stitches will work themselves out.

Yeah. They have to stitch up the holes where your teeth used to be......well, I guess it depends on if the teeth have come in or not. Mine still hadn't come it (well, they couldn't), so they had to be cut out.

Don't panic. For me, I only had one stitch per tooth. And they even had a time getting the teeth out on me, they had to break them. But it was nowhere near as traumatic as that sounds, and I only had one stitch per tooth and minimal swelling. Stitches came out a week later. I went back in and the guy just pulled them out with tweezers. Painless. Heck, don't they even use dissolving stitches nowdays?

Worse bit was my breath was really terrible for a week or two while it healed. Carry around some breath freshener. You'll be okay.

Look at this as an excuse to eat lots of ice cream and milkshakes.

Like RA said, milkshakes! I haven't had my wisdom teeth out yet but when I got teeth pulled as a kid I wasn't allowed food that night so I got milkshakes. Soup is good too, if the heat doesn't hurt your mouth.

One tip: for the first day or two, take your meds on a schedule, not when you think you need them. They take at least 30 minutes to start working and you don't want to be in agony while you wait for them to kick in.

I also had 4 impacted teeth all removed at once! FUN TIMES!!

As previously mentioned, avoid straws and stick with soft foods for a while. Liquid food are unnecessary.

I unfortunately DID get dry socket on my right side and thought I was going to die. Its when the blood clot thats healing over the removed tooth area gets dislodged and the nerve root is exposed to the air and elements and this = Major Pain. I went back to the guy who removed it and they had to repack the side with gauze soaked in clove oil which tasted horribly but helped immensely.

                Good Luck with your surgery.

I too had all four wisdom teeth pulled at the same time. The Dentist said they would all need it, and asked if I wanted to do them one at a time, or all at once. I chose at once to get it done and over with.

Seroiusly, most soups should be fine for you, so long as they aren't the "chunky" kind with big enough bits that need to be chewed. You should be fine.

Oh, and NOTHING that needs to be drank from a straw!

As for the actual extraction, it sounds much worse than it is. I didn't feel a thing during the extraction, and only a little pain after (of course, drugs help there. )

let's see...when i had all mine taken out, i lived on yogurt (and yogurt related products) and ramen.
as for stitches, i had the kind that dissolved. they were gone in like, a week and a half. just don't play with them with your tongue...that'll cause bleeding.
also...pain killers can cause pink elephants. but it's all goooood...

I just made a 'citrus' tapioca pudding with orange extract instead of vanilla... it was yummy and I took most of it to my sister who just had oral surgery. She's also on soft and liquid diet. Tapioca helps you feel fuller than regular pudding does.

I had dissolving stitches and that was 16 years ago (I was 18). (I had 4 other teeth out when I was 11, though, and I had to go back a week later to get the stitches removed.)

When I got my wisdom teeth out my surgeon gave me a small can of Ensure along with my care instructions; my mom used it to make a milkshake (wasn't too bad). Any kind of meal replacement shake is good (SlimFast, Instant Breakfast, etc.)

if it hasn't been mentioned be careful with some soups or broths or food that has little food particles that can get stuck in the empty sockets. i guess it varies per person. uhm. you may need to sleep sitting mostly upright for a few days so your mouth can heal. I say this based on experience helping a buddy deal with having her wisdom teeth removed however they weren't impacted they had grown in fully but for whatever reason were rotting. and I don't know if she got stitches or not. She did have dry socket but not for lack of trying hard to avoid it. And the stuff they gave her to help the dry socket was the nastiest tasting thing (she had to go back to the dentist) but it helped

Milkshakes are great but for the love of God, DO NOT SUCK ON A STRAW OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT!!!! Like AdminAssistant said -you'll be sorry. I did that and got dry socket. Its not something you'd wish on your worst enemy. Use a spoon and "drip" it into your mouth. I pretty much stuck to broths and juices after my dry socket episode.
