      Whats a dry socket?
After the teeth are removed, the blood clots and covers any exposed nerve endings, therefore saving you from extreme pain. If you suck on a straw or create any suction, you can dislodge the blood clot, exposing those nerves, and *bam* pain city. That's why you also need to be aware of nausea, because vomiting can create dry sockets. Somebody earlier explained them a bit better. But, as always, your orthodontist will give you the full rundown on it and all aftercare.

I couldn't take the prescription painkillers (don't remember what it was) because they made me sick. I didn't actually throw up, but I came awfully close. I tried again later with more food in me, and while the nausea was less, it was still too much. Stuck with Tylenol after that. Luckily I didn't have too much pain to begin with.

Don't do what I did and try to go out to lunch right after surgery. It was bad enough that my mouth was still numb and didn't want to work right, but I have younger siblings who thought it was hilarious.

If I remember correctly, I was told to avoid straws for 48 hours. My wisdom teeth weren't impacted or anything, so the guidelines might be different for you. You'll be sore and swollen for a few days, but hopefully that'll be as uncomfortable as it gets. It was for me, anyway.

I got all mine out at once (only one was impacted but two others were coming in sideways and the doc said why not get it over with). I didn't need a lot of pain meds and was back at work in a few days; my boss then was awesome and wasn't strict about my sick days as long as I let them know that morning whether I'd be in or not. I got put on customer-light duties until I could talk properly.

Ironically, my usual iced coffee habit seemed to substitute well for pain meds. The ice cubes helped as well; don't suck on them, just let it dissolve on or near the site.

When the stitches fell out, my coworkers were amused by my spitting out bits of string every so often.

In my case, my lower wisdom teeth were coming in at nearly 70 degrees from vertical, and impacted my lower jaw. Two HOURS in the chair per tooth, and they had to crack my jawbone to get them out. I couldn't open my mouth enough to have any food rated as 'solid' so I ended up living off of yogurt, milkshakes (with a spoon), and antibiotic mouthwash to keep the dozen stitches per side from festering, because I couldn't brush my teeth due to the swelling.

In my dad's words; 'Your breath is worse than a charnel house' followed by me flipping him off, because well, it was true. My breath smelled like old blood until the swelling finally went down enough for me to brush my teeth for the first time in two weeks, and I made sure I took more than five minutes of careful, slow brushing.

Geeze, they had to crack you JAWBONE? That sounds like a screw up they didn't want to cop to, why not break your teeth instead? I mean, would that not make more sense? Good GRIEF!

It wasn't a screwup; the teeth were in such a position that the only way to get them out was laterally, and the roots of the enamel decided they'd only move via brute force. (I was novocained for it, so was fully cognizant and indicated assent when they explained what they had to do in order to get the teeth out)

And it was years ago. I even go over to my bookshelf and rattle the pair in their little box on occasion.

Not sure if you've gone in or not, I've done the liquid diet thing for a month once (usually only a week at a time anymore for medical reasons) But if you have to be on one for more then a few days look into getting one of the powdered fiber suplements. I know there some that are orange flavoured, that and the protein enriched nutrition shakes.
My favorite are the Boost Mocha ones, when ice cold they are delish.

When I was 16, (hold crap its been 10 years?) I had to get 6 impacted teeth removed.... 4 wisdom, an extra tooth, and one that belonged in my mouth, but there was no room ...

any way - I was on soft foods only, and again NO STRAWS! - was told to avoid cream of chicken and chicken noodle soup - as the chicken fibers will get stuck in the "wound" - has surgery on wed morning, (and they knocked me out cold!) that afternoon i ate pudding and ice cream, and stayed doped to the gills, the next day, less dopey, but i finally got so tired of all the sugary stuff, that i called my mom at work, and asked if she thought cream of potato soup would be ok; had it, best bowl ever! and by Sat. I sent my dad to Arby's for a Beef & Cheddar - i could eat it with just the front teeth.

                          Update!

Ok I THOUGHT I was getting them pulled TODAY.

But due to my insurance (Mercy Care), I have to be pre-approved.

But we did go over there, watched a video. And the tooth doctor looked at my wisdoms. Both of them are impartial bonies: kinda wedged against the second molars.

I do thank you guys for all of your advice and reassuring me that it wont be hell. When does come time (hopefully) I'll put up a thread about it and reveal the horror.

Side note: We had to pick up my xrays from the other dentist (I was switching). Since they were printed ones (digitalized xrays!) I will show you how horrific my teeth look.

Because there's more things impacted than I realized aside my canines.
