  • Favorite Summer Foods!

    So...what's everyone's favorite summer foods?

My absolute favorite is watermelon sprinkled with chili powder. It is so good! However, the watermelon HAS to be bright red, otherwise, it's not as sweet or juicy.

I also like any type of berry that I can go pick wild.

I like yellow watermelons, I've never found them less sweet.

This is the time of year for green salad, and for hummus. Oh, and Baba Ganouj. I love having in-season veggies! (The hummus is because it's too hot to cook).

heard of watermelon sprinkled with ginger, but not chili

I like celery with soft cheese, vine tomatoes and feta cheese, olives and mushrooms in vinaigrette, prawns in rose sauce.

My fave's got to be my home-made pasta salad.

Sauce made by "sour cream" (actually it's based on skimmed milk, not cream), mustard, lemon, garlic and then a lot of crispy fresh veggies (red onions, bell peppers, bean sprouts, corn). If I want to go overboard with it I'll throw a can of tuna in there as well.

Really fresh sweet corn, just off the stalk, lightly boiled and dripping with butter and Salt.

Corn on the Cob (and you better believe I'll be hitting up the New Berlin Lions' Club Corn Stand at the Wisconsin State Fair )

Watermelon. Just plain. A few days ago I squashed some and put it in a glass with some lemonade. A little chunky, but good.

The idea of squashing watermelon makes me giggle a bit.

I love fresh veggies (mushrooms, zucchini, onion, garlic and potatoes) grilled in a foil wrap with pepper, salt and olive oil. Mmmm.

How does that work exactly? How much chili powder do you have to put on watermelon to work?

                              hrmmm.....

watermelon, field corn (much better than sweet corn IMO, if you can find it), fried okra and fried yellow squash (Momma specialties), purple hull peas, although black eye peas will do. Also, Dad will occasionally cook pork steaks out on the grill and they're yummy.
