  • STOP ME! Before I buy another car!

    Too late......

It’s a 78’ Pontiac Grand Prix LJ, the last new car the owner ever bought. Driven for a while, then put it into storage around 1993. Stayed in storage until about a year or so ago when she brought it out and was in the process of having it made road ready again (new tires, new brake lines, a few other misc things that went bad while it sat) but sadly, she passed away before it was finished.

A family friend arranged to sell it for them, and that’s who I picked it up from, mostly because he said he kinda wanted to see it go to a good home, someone who’d fix it up/care for it as opposed to chop it up for a lowrider or put it in a demo derby.

This is a VERY nice car as you can see, and it’s loaded (Keep in mind, most of this stuff wasn’t standard for a car in 1978)

    -Power Seats
    -Power Windows
    -Power Locks
    -Bucket seats
    -Rear Defroster
    -3 Speed automatic transmission
    -301 Pontiac V8 w/ optional 4BB carb

The only thing wrong body-wise is the rear filler panels between the body and bumper have fallen out, a casualty of UV light exposure, makes the plastic brittle, but if I replace that, the car would be show-ready.

Mechanically, it needs a new radiator (old one rusted in storage, replacement was in back seat) and electrically, the oil gauge doesn’t work, and the turn signals work on the outside ,but the interior indicator does not. Easy fixes.

Man, I love this thing already.

Nice Find! I've always liked the looks of those cars. Hope you have fun with it!

How many cars do you own? I've heard of at least 3 that I can think of I ask out of morbid curiosity, nothing else. :-)

Car looks beautiful. Easy fixes for such a well kept vehicle. I usually get compactor-ready cars and fix them. :-P

Well, lesse.... I currently have 5, but one is being sold as soon as it's out of the garage

        Right now I have

        -78 Pontiac Grand Prix
-86 Chrystler Conquest (Really a Mitsubishi with a Chrysler name)
        -87 Porsche 944
        -88 Chevy Camaro

and a 95 Ford Taurus that's up for sale to the neighbors who have a 16 year old kid who needs a safe, reliable first car with not enough power to get her in trouble....

There were a lot of Buicks around in my old town with that bumper. I think...IIRC, that bumper had 2 screws holding it on to the ass of the car. 2 screws for a heavy metal bumper....there were a bunch of cars in town and gradually they lost their bumpers.

          But.....bumpers aside...

I like it! It's SHINY and it has CHROME. (I love chrome. Old 50s cars with chrome? I melt.)

          MMMM.

Oh hey, I was chatting w/ a friend of mine today. Asked him if you could fit a Vette engine into a Camaro frame. He said yep. I was just thinking "what if" I did that. Dunno how heavy the Camaro is, and how much steering you'd get, but just the raw power makes me ....happy.

Good and a nice safe idea.

My sister currently owns/drives a 1988 Ford Laser. It's so old that there's no tacho on it, so it's a bit of a challenge for her to be able to determine when to take off (especially since our paid instructor drives an auto) and this one's a manual.

Mine's a 2001 Kia Rio that needs the timing belt fixed at some stage and needed a new battery. I am also very close to getting my P's on it and on the upside, I'm not likely to get pulled over by the police since my car doesn't LOOK like a hoon car

Nice ride! You don't see many of those in good condition now. Most are beat to hell and falling apart. With this one, it does seem that it was well-cared-for.

That 301 is nice. I had a '79 Grand Le Mans with one. Former Vermont unmarked state patrol car.

Tacho? P's, and hoon? I need a translation for your posts :P.

And I drive a '96 cherry red corsica, with a giant scratch mark on the side and a missing hubcap. Who wants to touch me?

Tacho is most likely tachometer. P's, can't help you there.

Cool car. My mom had an '81 Grand Prix. Loved that car. She only sold it because she was selling real estate, and a 2-door car just wasn't practical. Traded it in on an 1985 Caprice Classic. Ugh. Felt like I was driving a purple police cruiser.

gets better, I decoded the VIN, to see if it would tell me anything I didn't already know. Turns out, it's place of manufacture, was, Pontiac, Michigan

Tachometer: reads the speed of the engine, as opposed to the wheels.

P's: in Britain, plates which indicate you're a (newly) Passed driver as opposed to a Learner (with L-plates). Optional, but can make other drivers more cautious and/or courteous while you gain confidence and experience in driving on your own.

Hoon: British slang meaning to throw something around. Normally used in context of driving aggressively but not necessarily obnoxiously.
