  • Who still reads books?

I was on another message board and there's a thread called "Who still reads books?" and the OP is raving on and on about how books are dead and everything is about Twitter and IM and text messaging and get with the year 2010 already! Nobody cares about a bunch of books written by a bunch of dead guys! Who has time to read books these days!!

    I weep for the future.....
I question my sanity every day. Sometimes it answers.

They've been predicting the death of books for decades.

They may eventually all go electronic, but books as a source of reading entertainment will never full die.

The future is fine. Don't weep for it. Weep for ignorant people like the guy posting that reading a bunch of crap by dead guys is pointless. And for his children.

I don't care if one day they are only available on an iPad and not in actual book form, as long as I can continue reading J.R.R. Tolkien, Piers Anthony, Tim Dorsey, Carl Hiaasen, Robert Heinlein, and Gillian Bradshaw, among others, I'll be just fine.

        **raises hand**

I do, and reread them and carry them everywhere. I've never used a Kindle or other electronic reading device.. not even sure if I would like it. And I'm sure it's much cheaper to replace a book than an electronic reader (at least for now anyway)

Some are already in electronic format. One of my brother's friends loves to read, but hates carrying loads of books. Instead, she'll download them onto her Nook. Right now, she has just a few...but there are at least 1500 more titles to choose from.

I'll probably never go to that format, simply because reading computer screens is (IMHO) a bit tiring. Well, that and Classic & Sportscar doesn't come in that format to begin with

I still read a lot. Now more since I got my nook.

I weep for the person in the OP, they don't know what they are missing out on.

I love to read. I also covet my mom's Kindle. It's amazing--not at all like reading on a screen. If I could borrow books to read on it like I do at the library with physical ones, I'd be sold. Even with lower e-book prices, with my reading habit I'd be broke pretty quickly.

I love books... Comments like that make me cry...

I will buy all the books and build a library for the future. Who wants to join my library? You must sign up for snack bringing every other week..I will make the coffee. Lol.

Just got done reading Starship Troopers. Now I'm on Robert Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress then I'll be reading Space Cadet, also by Heinlein.

I've found that people raving about the death of books have usually just failed a Liturature class.

I have an e-Reader loaded with classics that I love and a few new books.

They may not be the dead tree editions, but I still love reading.
I have a...thing. Wanna see it?

I read both printed books and ebooks. I have a nook, and my new phone has a Kindle app, so I'm using both of those right now. Except the book I'm currently reading (Robert Jordan, The Gathering Storm) wasn't available as an ebook, so I bought the printed copy this weekend. Nice thing about the Kindle app is that I always have a book with me without having to carry anything extra.

I still read books. Caught a lot of flack for it from other students during high school.

Maybe if they ever give us a discount on it, I'll consider a nook. But I don't know, cuz I like my books.
