so I went to my first Anime/Video Game convention this weekend-in Adelaide, it's known as AVCon. I went with the boyfriend as our 1 year anniversary fell roughly around that time and we wanted to celebrate it in true geek style. (no, we didn't dress up, I might next year though)
Here are some of the highlights and weird costumes:
-One of the events was a bunch of "cosplay games." Basically, teams of three would do stuff in full costume that was absolutely hilarious. One of the games towards the end was "theatre sports." The individual one had someone imitating a Super Saiyan transformation (which eventually became a Super Saiyan taking a dump) which had everyone in giggle fits, and someone else had to imitate a Space Invaders game on his own. (the space invaders guy won that round).
-There was a lolita fashion parade, which went well. Someone even cross-dressed AND pulled it off well (this was the guy IN the parade). The presenter also cross-dressed and also pulled it off well. Someone got bonus points for a style called "geek lolita" which involved a similar dress to the other girls, but it was printed with images of Mario bros on it.
-A LOT of people had "sound tees." http://www.soundtees.com.au/tshirts.html
The one that had me giggling was Product 10 on the website (the one that has pot on it). I am definitely buying that next year.
-Both boyfriend and I managed to squeeze into the AMV Comedy Session. VERY funny and definitely worth it. Highlights included the "AMV game" at the beginning (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Htf-a...eature=related) and all the ones that were based around Avenue Q songs. Guess what song they finished up with?
-There was a section blocked off for music games-this included Singstar, Guitar Hero and Rock Band. There was a guy waiting at the Guitar Hero booth who had a sign on his back which said "Will Guitar Hero for Food." Another guy was walking around in a shirt which had "The Game" printed on it.
-My boyfriend LOVED the maid cafe they had at the con.
Costumes:
Thankfully boyfriend and I weren't the only ones who didn't dress up, however there were some interesting ones (given this was meant to be a "family friendly event" you couldn't show too much cleavage, butt or genitalia)
-Someone in the cosplay games dressed up as Chii in the pink dress she wears at one point in the series (the picture in this link shows the dress best it can. hers lacked the "hoop"look and didn't have a big bow in the back). she wound up getting good points in my book for actually being able to remove the bottom half when she needed it. (it was a bit longer for reasons I mentioned above)
-On the other hand, someone else dressed as Freya from the same anime. THIS is what she's meant to look like:

Freya does not wear a short, short dress with belt straps all over it. She looked more like a punk version if anything, rather than the style she wears in the anime.
-Someone else dressed up as a tentacle. I am not kidding about that. Someone ELSE dressed up as some metallic robot thingy with various tentacles coming out of its back. Both of the people in those costumes had trouble moving.
-The biggest WTF one came when we were just about to leave. someone else was walking around in a green t-shirt and jeans, with a KFC bucket on their head with an opening for eyes cut out. What the heck?
The best costume hands down was another presumably lolita one, it was a guy, and he pulled it off REALLY well. You couldn't even tell it was a guy until he spoke.

That is awesome.
