  • Bet you can't guess where this came from

The latest thing that's demanding my mechanical attention. Yeah, it's a motor that needed rebuilt (duh) but, can you guess what it belongs in?

Nope! It came out of this

a 1950 Ford 8N tractor, (here's what one looks like all together http://www.arthurstractors.com/Images/ford%208n.jpg) it's been in my family since I was just a little kid, and, well, after 60 years of working, general wear and tear took a toll and it finally broke something.

Even the non tech-savvy should immediately be able to spot the problem with THAT cylinder.

While it's all torn apart, we're replacing and restoring everything we can, there were a lot of "Well, it'd be nice if THAT worked" parts on it that we just deferred fixing until it finally stopped for good. The guages had all quit working, the starter had quit working, the body was getting rusty, the lights didn't all work, the radiator was always kinda leaky, the steering was loose and worn, etc. so we'll be fixing all of that, we're even going to repaint it.

The one on the left, or the one on the right?

I seriously thought "tractor" while looking at it...for absolutely no good reason. I have no tractor knowledge.

I could tell it was a Diesel just by looking at the head, and the size for a 4-banger made me think tractor.

I used to have an old Massey from the same era when I lived in the boonies.

          I miss my tractor.

I've got one sitting at our farm in NE Montana. Even though for most work we use a JD 8650, a Steiger Cougar, JD 4640 or JD 4440. For some little jobs we dig out the Ford or the old Massey. Can't beat the ford for running the posthole digger, and after all these years she fires right up.
