  • Rehoming Pets through Online Sites

Please be very, very careful if you either need to rehome a pet or are thinking about taking one that needs rehoming. A girl on my cockatiel board recently had to rehome her three birds because they were aggravating her asthma. She did everything right as far as meeting the people who wanted to take the birds, inspecting the home, and educating the couple on how to care for the birds. A couple days ago, one of the other posters recognized those same birds up for sale on Kiji. A massive rescue effort got the birds out safely and they have gone home with a third poster. The woman selling them had concocted a whole story about how these were her birds that she'd raised from hatchlings and how she paid hundreds and hundreds of dollars for them. In reality, she got three birds, nice cages, toys and toy making supplies, and a really nice carrier all for about $150. The woman sold everything that had value and thank goodness Poster 2 was able to recognize Poster 1's birds or they would have been sold as well. And thank goodness they were still together. All three were dirty and in a small tent-like carrier with a couple dirty, broken toys (since the lady sold all their nice toys and cages), but seemed no worse for wear.

Now, some might say that once the lady bought the birds, they were hers to do what she pleased with them. Which is true, especially since I don't think there was any sort of contract specifying otherwise. However, it's still wrong. So please be careful who you give your pets to or get your pets from. There are some unscrupulous characters out there who will do anything for a quick buck.

      1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
      2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
      3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
      4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

Yeah, I had to go cuddle my cockatiel after reading that. It didn't go over well, though since Oscar doesn't like being cuddled.

Yeah, she can do what she wants-- but lying? That's one thing that gets me upset more than anything else. She didn't even keep them in good condition so her lies could be believed! How dumb. Thank crackers the three darlings were alright. Can't birds get sick from not being clean? (Rashes and such due to dirt specifically)

I'm not sure about the dirt, but I'd be more worried about bacterial infections from living in dirty conditions. Even birds in the most meticulously clean cages can pick up infections from time to time.

                Still being a brat?

That's why my mum visited both of our breeders before she picked up the two we have now. Even though they were professional breeders, we wanted to make sure that the conditions were OK.
