  • Vitamins, vitamins everywhere...

    But not one I can take.

    I've been struggling with anemia for a couple of decades now. Every few years I go on an iron-rich multivitamin to try and bring my numbers up, and supplement the whole vegetarian thing.

    Small problem with that; I have IBS. My stomach *despises* normal, adult, capsule- or pill-form vitamins. I'm relegated to children's vitamins. Last time I tried an adult vitamin, I ended up sick every morning for two weeks before I figured out what caused it.

    So fine. Children's vitamins. This usually means Flintstones, since that's what I took as a kid. But most of the time, I get lazy within a month or so, and stop taking them, so I end up with a bottle gathering dust in a cabinet somewhere. Until I decide to either toss them for being stale, or start taking them again for another few weeks.

    A couple months ago, I started the vitamins up again. But this time, because it was part of a morning pill regimen, I actually kept taking them. For a full two months.

    Saturday morning. I get up, I futz around the flat for a bit, nom some fruit salad, and start thinking about coffee. Finally take my pills a bit late. While the coffee is brewing, I start developing a headache. Thinking it's the lack of caffeine, I hurry to finish, so I can toss some down my gullet. I have a sandwich for lunch, and start sipping at the coffee. Headache sticks around. I was playing Star Ocean, had started it over from the beginning; it'd been so long since my last save, I didn't remember what I was doing. Headache gets worse, and starts involving my stomach.

    Short time later, I realize this is a migraine, and it's not going away anytime soon. I manage to knock myself out on the couch for four hours, and let the majority of the migraine pass by.

    Sunday I skipped all my pills. Yesterday I only took the reflux pill, to try and eliminate triggers.

    Today I took both pills. And boom. Migraine.

    Yup. It's the vitamins.

    Turns out they have aspartame in them. Which is a migraine trigger. Never used to be one for me, but I guess things change. So now I have to find a NEW vitamin, aspartame-free, that doesn't have a ton of filler and is gentle on my poor, abused stomach.

    AUGH.

    Email is off to my sister, asking for advice. We'll see what she says. In the meantime, I'm looking up what vitamins are aspartame-free. Most of them have some sort of fake sugar in them.

    *sigh*

    Vitamins with sweetener in them. Forget the fact that they're using non-nutritive sweeteners. Vitamins with sweetener? What idiot sells that, let alone to children!

      They're chewable. That's why there's sweetener.

      Only thing I can find without Aspartame is a gummy. And I hate those. I always feel like I get more in my teeth than in my stomach.

          You can try to swallow the gummi bear vits if you dont wanna chew them. theyd work the same...

          You sound like my MIL. Anemic from dysfunctional uterine bleeding (aka heavy as hell periods) Hemoglobin of 7, but gets deathly ill from oral Iron supps...she is now allergic to the Venofer (IV iron) shes been getting for the past 5 weeks. She now needs a hysterectomy.

          At least you can figure out what triggers things for you! I hope you can get something that works for ya.

              Some of my friends do better with prenatal vitamins than regular iron pills. Have you considered trying that?

                I'm leaning towards that. Tossed an email off to my sister (MS4), see what she says about it. She might know a particular brand that will be best.

                The bad reaction to Aspartame doesn't surprise me, though it is frustrating. Mom has a similar reaction, but she can take normal supplements, so she doesn't have to worry as much.

                Yay for tea.

                    I was going to ask if you could take chewable adult vitamins (the dosages would be more appropriate, I would think); Centrum makes a chewable one (it's a gross "orange" flavor but I take it because I don't like swallowing big pills) but I think it has aspartame in it, too.

                      And now to throw another confusing spanner in the works...

                      I looked at the ingredients of my diet soda yesterday...it has aspartame. I've been drinking that sucker regularly for, oh, YEARS. With no difficulty.

                        Given all the issues with people reacting differently to calories they drink vs calories they eat, I wouldn't be surprised if non-nutritive sweeteners cause more problems in solid food than they do in drinks. Or at least different problems.

                          I'm just worried that it's related to the absorption problems.

                          I've tried everything to deal with that particular problem. I went veggie. I went vegan. I gave up dairy. I went gluten-free. I cut soy. Cutting the nuts out helped a bit (I'm allergic, although it presents oddly). At this point I'm starting to wonder if the digestive issues are related to the eczema, and it's all an auto-immune disorder that hasn't been sorted yet. My family has a long history of auto-immune disorders (RA, narcolepsy, psoriasis, idiopathic Raynaud's disease), so I'm really hoping it isn't that.

                            Have you been checked out for Celiac Disease?

                            One point that article ^ makes is there is gluten where you wouldn't think there was. You can be gluten-free and still ingesting gluten through odd sources (like medication)

                              See my previous post.

                              When I was 16, I was so severely anemic that they ran me through the battery of tests, and discovered my absorption issues. That prompted the round of tests that resulted in me trying every oddball diet known to medicine. Vegetarian (which has helped the most), Vegan, only dairy-free, gluten-free, soy-free, etc etc etc.

                              The issues persist whether or not I'm on medications.

                              I tried gluten-free again a few years ago, when a friend discovered that her migraines, seizures, and general Issues all came from gluten. She doesn't test positive for Celiac (both biopsy & genetics came back normal), but she definitely has an issue. So I tested it out. Went three months, no change.

                              Another theory that has been thrown out is that it's oestrogen-related. Which would mean I'm just generally fucked until I hit menopause.

                              Edit: I've actually been vegetarian for nearly 20 years at this point. I do occasionally eat meat, but it always causes the same problems again, so I recently decided to go fully-veggie again. I won't do Vegan again, though. That was far too difficult.
