  • Recipe help!

    Does anyone have recipes for someone who is on a low cholesterol diet? My Dr. wants to try me on the 300mg diet before putting me on meds. I have the booklet that my dr. gave me but that doesn't really help me a lot. My Google-Fu wasn't strong and all I found were information sites, but no recipes.

    First off, do you like vegetarian food? Not that I'm saying you should/want to make that jump, but the kinds of foods you can find here would probably go a long way. I grew up in a family of carnivores, yet I still love my broccoli and mushroom casserole.

    You'll find that meat in general is the top cholesterol when cooking. I cook a lot of vegetarian dishes, occasionally throwing in grown beef or cut up chicken breast or something, and I find it helps.

    Check out the Moosewood Cookbook. It's a very popular vegetarian cookbook with a whole sleuth of recipies. Some examples from memory, since I don't have it in hand below. An asterisk around dishes I've personally cooked and highly recoomend:

    Soups:
    Cream of asparagus
    Tomato soup*
    Gypsy soup
    Summer greens*
    Split pea soup*
    (About 50 others)

    Entree's:
    Mushroom and Broccoli casserole*
    Homemade lasagna
    Stuffed eggplant*
    Eggplant parmesan (baked, not fried)*
    Mushroom moussaka*
    (About 100 others)

    They even have hundreds of other pages dedicated to sandwiches, salads, and desserts. You can probably google these (ex. Moosewood Cookbook stuffed eggplant) to get an idea what kind of nutrition you can get. I just recommend this book because of how incredibly simple the ingredients list is and how easy I find most of the things to make.

        When I went on a cholesterol kicking kick, I upped my veggies, cut the fat, and upped fiber. Ate lean proteins.

        Like this:

        Brown rice, cooked in chicken broth
        Add spices (rosemary, basil, parsley etc)
        Steam veggies (no butter!!)
        Cooked chicken (no fry!!)

        Tofu
        LOTS of oats. Whole grain oat things. NOT OATMEAL COOKIES.

        And exercise.

          Yes, it's an Australian site, but http://www.bestrecipes.com.au/ might help. You can search by low fat, gluten free, etc.... so finding low cholesterol shouldn't be too hard. Another one is http://www.taste.com.au/ I always check these 2 out when I'm looking for something new or different.

                My entire diet consists of eggs. But look into ethnic foods. I'm fairly certain stuff like hummus, dolma (stuffed grape leaves), spanikopita are fairly low-cholesterol.

                  Me, I cook with fat from on high, and my mother once told me that she could feel HER cholesterol going up just from watching me eat. My parents, however, are on a low-fat and (I presume) low-cholesterol diet. If you want, I can ask Mom for some suggestions for recipes and/or recipe sites for you.

                      Just talked to my mom. She gets just about all of her low-cholesterol recipes from Cooking Light magazine or their website (cookinglight.com), or Food Network's website (food.com). She also recommended checking out recipes from Ellie Krieger.

                      By the way, I guess you should know that while most fish lowers cholesterol, salmon, despite all its good properties, actually raises cholesterol. Just a little FYI for ya. But keep using that cilantro!

                        Well either way.. the dish was only 34mg of cholesterol. Very good though. Had a little too much cilantro but it was good none the less!

                          i love cooking!

                          trying to eat healthy is great but usually $$$
                          found out kraft foods has some great recipes that should make a few of you happy

                          heathy living

                          ooooooooo look ETHNIC food
                          *grin*

                          i can vouch for the parsnip mashed potatoes, they use odd veggies here
                          and leek soup can be amazing
                          though i like taking leeks, onions, shallots, chives and garlic, pan frying it up with a lil olive oil
                          (better if you can get grape seed oil) then adding that to buggers or quiche or pizzas

                              not a lie, just a measured truth

                              family of five eating fresh produce every day adds up

                              now the recipes doctors give you to get healthy those are $$$

                              went to see a doc before we left the states, wanted to slim down after the last kid
                              he says, no problem, check out this diet plan and following it will help you lose x lbs by x date

                              i would have been broke the first week

                              right now we eat a lot of fresh veggies because he have a garden and a freezer to store extras in (new freezer mostly filded with bags of fruit picked at the house like mirabells, cherries at the inlaws house or the cheap crates of apricots from the store)

                              honestly we had to budget a lot living in md, ate mostly eggs and chicken as meat
                              pasta/rice/potato stuff once a week, canned or frozen veggies

                              granted single or couple you can better budget in the salmon and the other high cost foods
                              but for a family it is harder even with the ability to buy some things in bulk
