  • NEW (to me) CAR! (LONG!)

    WARNING VERY LONG.

Everyone knows what happened to my old car. Vandalized to hell and back, insurance flat out told me they would total it. When I asked what the buyback value would be, the guy stopped me and said that while he knows a lot of people will buy back and repair or part out, he said he really didn't want to see me do it on this car. The ONLY usable parts were stuff under the hood and the transmission, and a couple of windows. Maybe the engine computer. So I could have sold the engine/transmission for maybe $500, when the buyback would have been about that. It was a semi beat up 2001 Honda Accord LX, 5 speed manual, 4 door. CD player, power windows and locks, and that was it for options. Hail damage, peeling paint.

I got a $5800 payout after deductible, plus $325 for rental (double what I expected). In reality, I've spent about $600 on a rental, but more because I've been VERY picky about what I want to drive, and I still have it rented until Monday. I set aside $4000 for a car, about $1000 for potential repairs, the rest to pay my final month's rent, utilities, and moving expenses (keep in mind I've had 2 paychecks since then as well).

My requirements: manual transmission was my #1 priority, followed very closely by working air conditioning. The lower the better on miles, I'd prefer a truck or small SUV, but would take anything but another Accord (I've owned 3 goddamn Accords now, I'm sick of them).

Craigslist has been useless. Half the ads, minimum, are bogus to harvest emails. A lot more pretended not to speak English when calling (they posted a perfect english ad), many more sold before I called, the one I really had my heart on got sold out from under me (1987 Toyota 4runner 4x4, 150k miles, new suspension, new everything under the hood, working a/c), my second choice was a late model F-150 with a manual V6 and they started screaming in spanish when I asked "Habla English? Trucka?".

A payday loan place, of all places, pointed me toward 2 dealers in East Plano (I did have a payday loan, I paid it off in full today... they noticed I wasn't in the Accord and asked what happened, I told them). Yeah, I hate payday loans, I took one out 2 months ago in a tight spot.

Went to the first one she recommended. Small lot on the corner in a so so part of town, not bad at all, but definitely lower class. I pulled in, walked around, after a minute an older guy (65 or so) walked out and said hello, said he was the owner, told me they were all unlocked and I was free to pop the hoods and if I had questions he'd be inside. I stopped him immediately and told him "I'll be honest, I'm very picky in that I want a manual transmission, working a/c, and the lower the miles, the better". He had 2 on the lot with 5 speed. He took my ID to make a photocopy, then handed me the keys to both and asked me to try and be back within 30 minutes.

2000 Ford F-150, sticker of 6000. Inside smelled like smoke and I don't really like bench seats or manual windows. Didn't even bother trying that one, the bed was beat to crap. As much as I would like a 5.4L V8 (same engine in my stepdad's truck), ESPECIALLY with a 5 speed... it'd be a fast as hell truck, but city mileage is around 10-12 for my stepdad's 2001 F-150 5.4 automatic.

1999 Nissan Altima GXE. Sticker of 4000. Inside still has the new car smell (WTF?!), but hasn't been detailed at all aside from cleaning the carpet. Front bumper is a little rough, but original. 133k miles. I pop the hood, dig around a bit, discovered it has the famous Nissan KA24DE - the same engine in the 240SX, the hardbody trucks, and just about every 4 cylinder they made between 1985 and early 2000s. This is the DOHC version, most got the SOHC. They didn't attempt to clean anything under the hood, so everything was honest. Tiny valve cover gasket leak, small oil pan gasket leak - both are to be expected on this engine (if you see a KA24DE WITHOUT these leaks, something's wrong). I hand over my ID, get the keys, drive it for a few miles and generally beat the living piss out of it. FM radio doesn't work, drivers side window doesn't like to go up (probably a loose wire, easy fix), but the a/c is ice cold, it's comfy, no funny noises, if you lay on the brakes you get dizzy, and the tires are new.

Get back... I walk in, he asks how I like it. I tell him truthfully I really like how it drives and it handles great. But I've noticed it only gets AM radio (and barely at that), the dash trim is cracked from a previous break in, it's got a couple of oil leaks, and the window is an absolute pain to roll up. He nods a bit, he obviously knew all of this. I pull out my laptop and cellphone (I can tether my laptop to the phone for 3g internet) and start pulling up kelley blue book values, he's got it priced below "dealer excellent" and above "private party good". I tell him I consider it to be in fair condition due to the oil leak, misaligned bumpers (though they're original), and the radio (which is most likely due to the broken antenna - either way, it's getting an aftermarket with an aux input anyway, I can stream pandora on both my phone and laptop, and have a 30gb Zune).

Sticker was 3995 + TTL. I offer 2500 + TTL, he thinks and asks if I'm paying cash, check, CC, or finance. I tell him I have cash in my pocket, and he agrees. I'm pretty sure I had a little more wiggle room, but the car is actually in pretty decent shape aside from damage to the bumper and bezel around the stereo. Paint is PERFECT on it and looks to be original, and it was a 1 owner trade (he still had the title for it and showed me the original owner bought it new). I told him how much I appreciated him not detailing the engine bay, that gave me an honest look at any leaks. He said he doesn't believe in detailing cars aside from shampooing the upholstery, maybe a quick wax, and that's it. He said he knows that anyone who knows anything about cars is going to run from an engine bay that looks like it had an armor all factory explode under the hood, and I told him that's my exact same train of thought. We actually had a pretty friendly conversation while I was trying to get insurance lined up for it. Seemed to be a nice guy, said he retired ages ago and just sold cars a few days a week for a little extra income.

It's a LOT more fun to drive than the Accord. It has a 2.4L 4 cylinder with 150 hp, 154 ft/lbs tq, dual cam. The Accord had a 2.3, 150 hp, 152 ft/lbs, single cam, but being a VTEC engine, to get that power you had to rev the piss out of it. The KA24DE in this car started out as a truck engine, so the HP and torque start really low in the RPMs. And it's a much lighter car that seems to be well maintained, mechanically.

So here's the photos. I already have it fully insured, it still has the previous owner's plates (plates follow car in TX), but since TX introduced 7 digit plates, whenever a car changes hands via dealer a new 7 digit plate will be issued. So I'm kinda nervous driving on no-longer-valid plates for the next few weeks. He advised me to keep my bill of sale in the car.

Also, the open fuel door I've already fixed, the release cable had popped out of its holder. Just needs a new c-clip to keep it in place. The sun visors also fall out if you use them - again, just need c-clips. I think I'll drop under $100 in junkyard parts to fix every problem except the oil leaks, and I could care less about minor leaks.

http://picasaweb.google.com/awfulbea...eat=directlink Sorry, camera battery died when I opened the hood, but it's a pretty typical, slightly oily KA24DE. I'm going to powerwash under the hood tomorrow and also the oil pan so I can get a good idea of what's still leaking, I did see some recent work on the valve cover gasket. Also had new plug wires (probably plugs too), distributor cap, air filter, etc. The oil is dark, so it could stand to be changed, and I'm definitely going to change the transaxle oil.

Very nice. One of the few cars I like (well... like is a relative term) because it comes close to having enough space for Jackdaw inside.

It does need some work - but nothing to make it reliable.

The antenna is broken off at the trunk - and whoever tried to fix it took a drill to it, ruining the entire antenna assembly. I swung by a local Nissan dealer, parts mgr confirmed it's completely fubar, but noticed the dealer name that I got it from and said that that particular dealer has an excellent reputation. Looks like it'll take about $35-40 to replace the entire antenna assembly (I've already removed it.. 1 bolt, 1 screw, 1 wire). Getting the antenna assembly tomorrow (today) from Courtesy Nissan in Richardson. Parts manager asked how much I paid for it and how many miles it had, I told him, he whistled and said I got a damn good deal and that it'll run forever.

Installed a new stereo - the original worked fine when it could get a signal, though I never tried the cd player. I wanted something with an aux in for an mp3 player, so I stopped by my favorite high end car audio shop. Got their cheapest stereo the Alpine CDE-102, which is pretty damn nice. With mounting harness, wiring harness, antenna adapter, and labor, it still came out to about $260, but lifetime warranty on everything and I've bought all my car audio and alarm stuff from these guys for 13 years (I DID NOT GET IT FROM CRUTCHFIELD, THAT JUST HAPPENED TO BE HANDY FOR A GOOD DESCRIPTION OF THE STEREO). Turns out the front speakers need a little love, but I'll deal with that later. I'm happy to have an input for my mp3 player, plus now I get a little storage cubby since the old stereo was double the height.

Passenger side door does not unlock with the key unless jiggled. I'll have the dealer cut a new key, should be under $10.

The climate control doesn't fully light up at night. No big deal, should be about an hour and a few bucks worth of bulbs.

The only REAL annoyance - drivers door window rolls down fine. Rolling it up is a massive pain. You have to open the door, hold the button, and repeatedly kick and/or beat on the door until something finally makes contact. I really hope it's just the switch, I can swap that without removing the door panel. Otherwise I have to dig in with a multimeter and figure out what isn't making contact.

Fixed the burnt out license plate light, and shoved a random bulb into the trunk light socket (way too dim, but it's something until I figure out what the proper bulb is).

Oil change place tried to upsell me by over $500 even though I kept telling the guy I JUST WANT THE OIL CHANGED. He even called me an idiot when I told him I've been working on cars for over 20 years, I just don't like changing my own oil. I told him "Change the fucking oil and oil filter and let me have the car back, stop trying to scam me, stop trying to upsell me, I've told you twice not to try any upsales on me, got it?". Asshole slammed the hood so far that the hood latch broke along with the grill, then peeled out of the shop and slammed on the brakes in the parking lot. You better believe the manager and I have had some SERIOUS words, and I'm in contact with their corporate office. He even tried to tell me my air filter was filthy (I changed it today) and my automatic transmission fluid was burnt and needed to be flushed. I told him if he could find the automatic transmission, have at it... he looked pretty stupid when he looked inside and saw the 3 pedals + 5 speed shifter.

Bloody hell - I shouldn't laugh, but I can only smirk at the image of him claiming your transmission fluid was shot and then seeing the manual shift. Nice one!

Sounds like your car's a keeper, if those idiots don't break it.

Like I said, it definitely has issues, but none of them affect drivability at all. It drives like it's brand new, hauls some serious ass for something with a 4 cylinder (a really big 4 cylinder at a 2.4L), and if you sneeze on the brakes you get dizzy because of how fast it stops. When I test drove it, the first time I touched the brakes I locked them up, huge change from the spongy brakes my Honda had.

Going by looks, the front bumper has minor damage that I don't plan to ever fix. The rear bumper is sagging, but that's a very common issue and easy to fix (might fix it eventually).

The speakers are terrible, but that's not hard to fix, I just need to come up with about $150 for 4 low end speakers and spend a couple of hours putting them in. The antenna WILL be fixed today, local dealer has it in stock and at a very good price. The only real annoyance at this point is the drivers door power window... rolls down great, but once it goes down it's a complete bitch to roll back up (took me almost 10 minutes to get it to roll up tonight).

I figure once I fix all the interior problems, I'll have a total of $600 into it, including new speakers, new stereo (that's the majority of it right there), and a window switch, maybe a relay. I could have skipped the stereo entirely, I just wanted an aux input. I don't plan to fix the oil leaks as long as they remain minor.

The KA24DE engine under the hood is one of the longest lasting designs from Nissan... debut in the mid 80s I believe, still going into the early 2000s. Most known for being in the US market 240SX and hardbody pickup trucks. If you keep about a half quart of oil in it and piss in the radiator from time to time, they'll keep running. You can definitely tell it's a truck engine, the power comes on low and it falls flat on its face around 5000 rpm, but I got the fairly rare dual cam version, most of them had single cam.

If you're familiar with the Toyota 22R/22RE (of Toyota Hilux fame on your side of the pond), this is Nissan's answer. I think I may have overpaid slightly, but I got it from a family owned dealership and the guy was more than willing to shoot the shit with me about business in general while I was getting insurance put on the car.

In short, I'm very happy with it. It moves damn quick for what it is, handles like a go-kart, and is very comfortable while remaining nimble and powerful. My only gripe is the shifter is very vague, it's hard to tell if I'm going from 2nd to 1st, 3rd, or 5th. Nothing some new bushings can't fix.

Some google turned up a 100% COMPLETE factory service manual for this car in PDF. I dug through the electrical trying to figure out what's up with the drivers window. 99.9% sure it's the switch or the connector to it. I hit up a junkyard with 2 Altimas today.. 1 was a 96 and a bit different, the other was a 98 (same body style as mine) and while it was missing the power window switch, it did have the connector and I could see where part of it had corroded and melted. I assume mine looks the same.

I also found a, not mint, but MUCH better climate control/stereo/shifter bezel for mine. My original one was held together with luck and black magic, heavily damaged from a previous stereo theft, with the stereo falling into the dash (with a professional installation even, the installer told me all the mount points were broken). downside was the donor car was automatic and I couldn't figure out how to get it out of park.. normally there's a way to force a key or screwdriver into an opening to force it out of park. Wound up breaking a lot of plastic behind the dash so I could twist the bezel sideways and get it out in a single piece. I now have a almost new looking bezel, a working ashtray and lighter socket (no lighter, but it's now live, I just want the lighter for if/when I sell it), and the pocket under the stereo doesn't disappear into the shifter console. All of $6 + tax!

The Altimas I found had power antennas, mine is manual. Courtesy Nissan (local nissan dealer) has ordered the complete assembly for me, should have it tomorrow. I also need to have them order sunvisor mounts, my visors fall off every time I use them and the mounts are apparently press-fit plastic pieces. Shouldn't cost much.

Fixed most of the non-working lights... basically trunk and license plate lights. I do have to yank the climate control to replace the bulbs behind it, it doesn't light up at all, and it looks like the bulb at the top of the speedometer is out.

Now I just need to fix the damned drivers side window. Rolls down great, have to kick the living shit out of the door while holding the switch to get it to roll up. After seeing the connectors I saw in the junkyard, and looking at the factory electrical diagrams, I'm 99% sure it's corrosion in the connector or a bad switch.

This is the schematic for the master window switch and drivers door. Looks pretty simple, only a couple of relays that aren't even inside the door. I have power locks, but no sunroof.

Well I found a few things.

Turns out, if you attempt to remove the door panel without disconnecting the power window switch, it RIPS the switch apart. Also turns out you can pop the switch out with a screwdriver before removing the door panel.

Either way, the switch had several broken contacts on it. The junkyards I've been to have not had any intact window switches for this car. courtesyparts.com (owned by courtesynissan.com) stocks it for $112 or so, but they're closed Sundays and I'm stuck with a window stuck open (and NONE of the windows will work without the master switch connected). But wait.... there's an autozone open until midnight in the ghetto, and... THEY HAVE THE SWITCH IN STOCK FOR $90!!!! (lifetime warranty even)

I did try probing the connector with my multimeter to see if I could roll up the window. 1 pin made the parking lights come on, that was weird, another threw a huge spark, but didn't blow any fuses.

I haul ass out to Autozone and grab their last switch. Pop it in... turns out the new one lights up with the parking lights, which explains why I managed to back feed the parking lights. It's also redesigned so that it doesn't fall apart if you look at it funny.

All 4 of my windows work perfect now! Drivers window is no longer flaky, power locks work, everything works.

And Courtesy Nissan had my new antenna assembly for me today (though they didn't tell me it didn't have the mast). $6.99 at Autozone got me a new mast.

So far I now have working radio (plus aux in from my Zune on my new stereo), all windows working, I just need new speakers badly and a couple of bulbs behind the climate control. I also snagged a new trim bezel around the climate control, stereo, shifter, and ashtray for $6 at Pick n Pull. It's not perfect, but it's in one piece unlike the last one, and looks far, far better... and the ashtray doesn't fall out if you touch it. I don't smoke cigs, but it's nice to have for a storage compartment.

                      YAY!

Picked up some ricer-ish clear front turn signals. I've always preferred either full amber or full clear housings. Preferably full amber. But hey, they were $10 and one of my stock ones is cracked. Guy I got them from used to have a 99 Altima, same color and trim as mine.

So tomorrow I pull the stock ones off (he showed me how easy they come off, it's literally 1 screw for each one) and put the new ones in with amber bulbs. They"re in a gray area with legality, so I'm keeping the stock ones for when inspection times come around. Should make the front look a little better.

Also, a huge FUCK YOU to whoever decided how to mount the engine in this car. I need to do the belts, and I'm told that the timing chain guides need to be replaced.

                        Here's the engine:

The "front" of the engine is on the passenger side. I don't think I can get a single finger in there between the engine and strut tower. I need to replace 2 belts and get to the timing chain. Oddly enough, it's a different color under the hood, but I looked up the paint color for the car and the body is the correct color.

If you see that TINY yellow thing between the alternator, upper radiator hose, and exhaust manifold.. that's the oil dipstick. I burned the living crap out of my hand and arm trying to check the oil yesterday.

I need to find a 5 year old illegal immigrant to work on this thing for me. Or a midget. These belts are going to be a friggin nightmare to replace.
