  • Soda.

So, a little corner store opened right across from my house. Takes about 15 secs to get from my front door to theirs...so its pretty damn convenient.

One day, im feeling a little nauseous and ask hubby to get me some ginger ale. He goes to the store, comes back and i pour a cup. I drink, it tastes odd. Thinking it was b/c i was sick, i ask hubby to taste. No, its definitely off. Hubby checks the expiration date, its June 01, 2009. So, hubby takes it back, talks to the owner guy about the expired soda and comes home with a 20 oz in-date ginger ale for me.

About 2 weeks later, hubby goes off to get some sprite or something for us to drink (ie me to mix with my Lime rum...mmm) and he comes back empty handed. I ask whats up and he says all the Sprites were expired by about 6 months. He told the cashier (not the owner, just a girl that works there) and she said she would tell the owner.

So yesterday, again, Hubby goes to get a Sprite so we have something to drink with dinner and the same expired Sprites are there. The owners there, so hubby talks to the owner. Owner remembers the expired Ginger ale conversation, so he apologizes to hubby and says he'll speak to his employee about pulling expired products and etc. Apparently, this guy has been having issues with the delivery companies.

Im a little worried that the Owner will think all my hubby does is complain b/c it seems he is the only one pointing out expired products. I dont want him to think we're annoying or just like to bitch. Hubbys dad used to own a grocery store so he feels like the owner should know what he selling b/c his dad wouldve liked to know.

Does it seem like overkill to point out the the soda if we show up for some and every damn time its expired? The milk has, so far, been inside the expiration date so theres that at least. IDK.

its not very convenient if everytime you go there the stuff you want is expired. I dont think ive ever checked a soda expiration date. Its nothing but chemicals.. it cant rot or anything (as far as i know) :\

You have to remember that all soda's are acidic, and the only thing that keeps them contained is a glass wall, a thin wall of plastic or a lacquered thin sheet of aluminum (yes, they do apply a food-grade lacquer on the inside of the can.). With the exception of the glass, the acid will corrode the material that it's contained in, which is part of the odd taste. The other part is the carbon dioxide settles in the container, which causes it to go flat. Heavy shaking and opening allows it to occur faster.

That's strange, because all products like those are vendor products. At least in grocery stores, the vendors are in charge of delivering and pulling their own product from the shelves.

My husband kinda asked him about his supplier and it seems theyre a company that specifically caters to small groceries. So maybe the supplier thinks they can get away with it? OR the owner is lying to my husband b/c he doesnt want to look bad and probably is supplying his own sodas, buying expired soda b/c its cheaper?

My first thought is "shopkeeper decides to turn a little extra profit by stocking up on expired merchandise and selling it at regular retail rates." He might be sore that he got noticed and is hoping you'll go away, at least until he unloads all the expired stuff.

A long long time ago, a friend of mine bought, like, an entire PALLET of diet soda at a hugely cut rate. He thought he was getting a hell of a deal until a third party let him in on an unpleasant little secret - diet soda goes off even faster than regular soda and is generally undrinkable inside of ninety days. Had the relevant video been popular at the time, I would have recommended Mentos and a camcorder.

That's assuming you get a vendor, or and delvery person that does their job.

Many a times we get vendors to order stuff, never check the dates, and the delvery people just throw soda's in front of older stuff, unless you get a clerk that does their job by watching them and making sure they do it. Many a times, the drivers and vendors try to make you sign as soon as they get in, so the real shit head ones just drop all the pallets and leave them for you to stock on your own time.

The vendors and delvery people hated me, because I made them do their job, which includes checking in product, making them put it in correct areas and the closer expired dates goes in front of newer product, and them giving us correct credit.

Alot of times, we did have to take out expired dates, and we had to have a set amount before they give us credit for it.

^^^What Plaidman said. Some vendor reps are total slugs.

Another thing I just thought of is we have to hold expired/return Pepsi/Coke/7Up product until we get a certain quantity of it; only then will the vendor take it back. I think anyway. In a few years I'll have to know for sure.

So if the stockroom is a disorganized mess and this outdated product isn't clearly marked or kept someplace away from the good stock, it can easily make its way back out to the floor.

The rep we have from Pepsi is very good at checking for expired stuff, and pulls it out when she comes every week (if any), and gives us credit. Coke, not so much so. I guess it has a lot to do with the vendor reps in your area.
