  • Why Are You Logged In On CS From Work?

So, I'm chatting via IM with another member right now. The question has been asked, and I was asked to post it here:

We have a subsection of the community that logs on, via work computers, during their work hours. Why do you do it? Why do you run the risk of losing your job?

    Inquiring minds want to know!

My response: I do software development all day. My mind needs a break here and there, and coming here provides a few minutes of diversion.

    So, who's next?

I used to log on to CS from work. Never to post, only to read. It was also a diversion for me. Work sucked at times, and it ws nice to have a laugh.

They they redid the security and CS didnt make the cut... Somehow its been deemed offensive?

If I wanna CS at work, i use my iTouch. More privacy that way anyways..you never know when the hospitals IT dept is tracking you...and people have been fired over internet misuse.

Interestingly, I don't have a job. But when I did, I came here all the time. But that isn't why I got laid off. If they knew it and were planning on hitting me with the accusation if I got feisty about getting the ax, I will never know. But I went willingly and we parted amicably.

If my employer was the sort that cracked down on such activity, I would not have done it. And I did deliberately avoid questionable things, for the most part. But in all honesty, the cable company I worked for didn't care much what we did. I worked in Marketing and we pretty much did as we pleased. Most folks had tv sets in their offices. We cube dwellers usually had Hulu or YouTube chugging away in the corners of our screens as we worked.

We used the internet pretty heavily, both for keeping info current for the customers and for our own resources. I don't think I ever even encoutered a firewall.

However, had it been a job where I thought they would fire me outright for crusing around on the internet and coming here, I would not have done it. I rather liked that job.

the last white collar last job I had was pretty lax on the internet thing. as long as we were not taking tech cupport calls we could pretty much do whatever we wanted ans surf where we wanted. and that is how I eventually found CS through a site called "Customers Eat My Shorts". between the 7 of us in a converted garage we came accross some pretty wierd sites. Heck when we were bored we used to have Unreal Deathmatches, CTF and such.

The Job before that had somewhat lax rules as well. as long as it was not full on pron or stuff like that we could surf pretty much anywhere

DAMN it HAS been 9 years since I found this heaven sent place

I'm damned careful about what I look at while I'm at work. Unless I'm researching anything specific to my job then I stick to BBC news, and local news - both are reasonable to my job to view.

I work from home, so I typically don't use my work computer to view CS when I'm working. I usually have my personal laptop nearby, which is on a different network..so I just use that.

Very occasionally I'm in the office, and I'll view - but never post.

Our company is pretty lax about surfing. Despite some of their other draconian rules, as long as we do our work they don't really get on us about personal internet usage. Unless it's something illegal or pornographic, I would assume.

I used to log in and post from work...

                Until they blocked cs.com.

My employer doesn't allow us to get on CS and I'm not about to try breaking their firewalls anytime soon. Luckily, Fratching isn't blocked.

I work for a company that provides the internet to businesses (as in we give them point to point VPNs as well as provide streaming content access think when you see a rebroadcast from TV major event that's going through my company I work for) We are under no restrictions at work, we sometimes have to... well... view porn to see what the issue the company reporting their issues sees..... I read and post to help pass my 3rd shift quicker and make me happier on the job by getting, usually, a good laugh.

I log in at the self storage place. There is nothing going on for hours at a time, and as long as the important stuff (rent, late calls, deposit, etc.) is done, they don't care what I do.

Since I'm an owner of my company, there's no risk of me losing my job.

Small company and as long as the work gets done they don't care.

Plus I am married to the IT guy and I am half of IT. Plus if I didn't have funny in my day I would go insane and hurt someone.
