  • I Got a NEW TV SET . . .

Oh I'm so excited today . . . Mom and I went out for a little bit of shopping today. Just got our living room furniture paid off last month (yay) and of course, wouldn't you know it, something else decided to kick the bucket.

My 27 inch Magnovox tv/vcr/dvd combo decided over the past two years I've had it (bought it pre-leased in 2003 and paid cash for it) has been conspiring to die on me.

First, the VCR part kicked out . . . wouldn't rewind when it reached the end of the tape, but the tv would automatically turn off (I think it got damaged during a power surge.)

Then the DVD went out on it a few months ago. I have a VCR/DVD combo unit that I simply hooked up to it so I could still watch my movies.

Then I started noticing a line running through the top of the screen, then over the summer the sound started buzzing intermittently and/or would change.

Last weekend, the remote stopped working. I changed batteries out, but no . . . the remote was deader than a doornail.

So we were forced to go shopping . . . . went back to the RTO store and I originally spotted a 26 inch Sylvania LCD . . . unfortunately it was already rented, just waiting to be delivered with the bedroom set it was with.

Looked around some more and ended up with a 32 inch LG LCD flat screen. Got the paperwork done, went off to do a little more shopping after making arrangements to have it delivered (which was supposed to be after 2 pm today.)

Got our other shopping done (which is great when it's all in one shopping center) and finished early, so Mom called for the SCAT bus to come by early (we were done right after 12 but our pickup was supposed to be between 12:40 and 1:10) when we noticed the delivery van leaving the store.

Got a phone call from my brother about 15 minutes later saying they were already at the house with the tv set . . .. and a rug that Mom decided she wanted to get (a really pretty beige shag area rug) but has no idea where she's going to put it yet.

After I had my brother put one of the guys on the phone, I told him just to leave the rug in the dining room floor and the tv was to go to my bedroom and I would need it hooked up (I have no idea about these new flat screens . . .)

No problem. We got home about an hour later, the rug was waiting for us in the living room floor out of the way, the new tv was hooked up and turned on in the bedroom and the old tv is sitting in the office floor (my brother and I will take it out tomorrow and set it out on the hill by the road - somebody will come and take it off our hands.)

The guys at the store are absolute AWESOMESAUCE.

Now all I have to do (after doing some slight rearranging on the components) is to get the Satellite remote programmed for the tv (found the codes already via Google) and I'm good to go.

Congrats! I too just retired my 27" TV. I bought it in 2001, and it was starting to show it's age, plus, I want to be able to watch stuff in HD. Costco had a 47" Vizio LCD for under $700. My mom's cousin had just purchased one, so I did some research, then went to my local Costco & picked one up. Recruited my brother-in-law to help me get it set up, which we did today. Got to watch Avatar on the Blu-ray player I picked up at Best Buy. I am not planning on leaving the house this weekend. Borrowed the Blu-ray of Mama Mia from a friend, so I'll be entertained.

Pretty much. We have a 120 day same as cash option, which will work out fine since Mom is expecting another installment on her back Social Security pay in either October or November, so we can have the tv paid off in full then.

So for right now, we're making monthly payments, but not for long.

Here's a hint to get rid of the old TV fast:

Put a sign on it saying $20.

Chances are it'll disappear quickly. Worst case, someone will pay you $20 for the TV.
