Ok. My advice, from having spent a long time trying to find a bank.

      Go with Chase.

The fees are waived if you use your debit card at least 5 times a month, or have direct deposit. Their customer service people are fantastic (even more so if you have one of their Rewards Debit cards), and pretty much everything can be done via ATM or online without ever having to see a teller.

I've had issues with them in the past, but half the time it's my own fault, and the other half it's easily resolved. I've been with them for six years now. More than six years.

Interesting...I have Chase (formerly Washington Mutual) and have direct deposit plus way more than 5 debit transactions a month...and definitely no fees. So far anyway. Now my question to Lupo is does your work do a a "live" check when you change banks for direct deposit? When I had to change accounts last year.....I had to RUN my live check down to the bank to deposit it just in time for them to take my rent out...I literally made it by hours. Whew. So that's something to think about.

And yeah it was a PAIN in the ASS to change accounts. I had to do it to get an ex boyfriend off my account. I don't have a lot of direct deposits or withdrawals but the ones I do have I had to change....gigantic pain and I feel for you. I also know what it's like to live paycheck to paycheck and have to practically dig for change in the couch to buy groceries sometimes. And I gotta do it for 4 people

I'm so sorry that you have to deal with that crap. Personally I have accounts with two banks, mainly because I love Middleburg Bank but they don't have a branch anywhere near me (nor did they have any ATMs but now there is one in Williamsburg and they will be opening a branch here as well ) so I also got an account with Suntrust when I moved down here to go to school. Suntrust has always been good to me (and still has no minimum balance on my checking account) but I like the personal attention that Middleburg gives me, I actually get a phone call if any fees are going to be charged to my account so that I can have a chance to do something about it (like the inactivity fee on my savings account, or overdraft fees even though I don't actually have overdraft protection).

In short if there is a local bank that you can use I would try them as you tend to get better taken care of, but if that isn't an option then there are still some big banks that are perfectly fine as well.
