  • For someone who hates fennel

and who is less than fond of cooked carrots, I sure do love carrots cooked with fennel.

In fact, I can't stop eating carrots cooked with fennel.

This is madness. I despise fennel. It sends me running away with my hands over my face. And I am not a huge fan of carrots, either. So why is it that the two of them together is irresistable to me?

Seriously, it's not just the carrots, either. I was licking the fennel seeds out of the pan when cleaning up after supper. I could not stop.

Which is weird, because officially, I hate fennel.

    Some sort of imbalance maybe?
I normally won't eat red meat, but when my iron is low, I crave the stuff. Like, fighting the impulse to eat it raw crave.
Or, your tastebuds really like the combination, rather than the parts.

I'm trying to think of a combination I'd like if I didn't like the separate ingredients. I can't think of anything. I mean, I don't care what you put brussels sprouts with; I will hate them still. So, I'm wondering how you came to use fennel in your dish if you hate it?

Ok, this is a challenge. Have you tried lemon juice? Because it's acidic it counters the bitterness.

I love brussels sprouts and eat them all year, but some types are very much more bitter than others, I just steam mine or put them in a beef casserole to soak up the flavours.Yum!

I like sweetcorn cold, but hate it cooked, and I know someone who will eat cold tomatoes in a salad but will not eat any form of cooked tomatoe.

Once a month we have dinner with three other couples, and we take turns hosting. The goal is to share our favorite recipes. One of the women made these things when it was their turn to host and I lwent nuts over it and got her to send me the recipe.

I know I don't like the ingredients, but I felt like I was obligated to at least try it. Good thing I did.

My mom hates curry but she loved this carrot slaw which has curry. In fact, that's the first scent that hits you when it's served. Go figure.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

I am a one-woman carrot apocalypse when they are raw, but cook them and I will not even give a "polite bite."

Another option, only buy (or harvest as the case may be) nearby-grown sprouts after the first frost in your neck of the woods--they are much better then.

Well, I am like you in that I much prefer them raw. But the whole point of the "supper club" is to try new things.

EDIT: Okay. I just took a pinch of fennel out of the jar and ate it. It was absolutly horrific. Had to wash out my mouth.

The tastiest ones are the ones still on the stick which you have to detach but you dont often see them on sale like that.

                        Of course
I would join one of those, but I have so many food intolerances and allergies they'd just give me a saltine cracker with some peanut butter on it.

Maybe it's something in the way the carrots and fennel flavors fuse together when they're cooked. I know I hate raw onions, but I love having them cooked in dishes. Or breaded and deep fried.

Wait, there's a reason they sell them like that? I thought it was just for the novelty.

Try a farmstand or farmers' market.
