  • Things You Worry You Did

Anyone else have these worries - you know it probably didn't happen, but it might have done?

For example, when driving if I pass a cyclist I will check back several times "just to make sure I didn't run him over without noticing".

At work, when I come out of the toilet, I worry I had a bit of toilet paper attached to my skirt which dropped off then someone picked it up and threw it away and now they won't tell everyone saw it...........

At a shop if I pick something up to look at it, worry that the security guard will follow me out and not realise I put it down again..............

    I worry like that too.
Yesterday I went to the fabric store with my husband, well I had a bag of scraps that were the colors I wanted. I picked out the bolts, walked to the cutting table, and hubby stayed in the fabric room to fold the scraps I had and put them back in the bag. I was so worried they thought I was stealing fabric, I almost started crying.

      My keys.
I am so, so afraid of losing my keys down a drain, grate, dropoff, anything. I was so paranoid at one point I was staring at my keys in my hands, up in front of my face at eye level, as I closed the (locked) door to my car.
And I still was scared that I shut them in.

Yeah, I have spares to get in, on the car even... but for some reason that doesn't matter?!
I'm like that rarely with other things, but it's usually my keys.
I don't think I have a traumatic lock-out story to go with it...
"Is it the lie that keeps you sane? Is this the lie that keeps you sane? What is it?Can it be?Ought it to exist?"

        My door.

I am so paranoid about whether or not I've locked my apartment door that I will actually turn around and double check. Every time I leave, I grab the key and lock so fast and so instinctively that I barely think about it. Then when I'm at work or traveling, I wonder if I really did this time.

There have been times where I've turned around two or three times just to make sure that I really did lock the door, as if I simply forgot to check the first two times I turned around.

Someone tried to break into my apartment about two years ago. Fortunately, I'd fallen asleep on the couch, and the idiot make a racket trying to take the bug screen off my window. I knocked on my window and scared him off, at least. Since then, I've just been worried about it.

I'm also paranoid about packing. Did I really pack my toothbrush? I better check a fifth time.

I worry about clean underwear whenever I pack...I seriously will bring 6+ pairs for a two-day trip somewhere.
On the plus side, if I ever am in need of clean underwear or elastic, I have plenty.

My brother will freak out if you walk by the bathroom when he's in it. One time he got a phone call from his fiance, and I knocked on the bathroom door when he was in the shower.... He freaked out and I could her him jump and hit his head...I thought I had knocked him out by scaring him...

I worry about everything. It's so not healthy.

I've worried late at night at work whether or not I locked the door. If I locked the car. If I unplugged the flat iron. If I shut this off. That off. I worry before I go to sleep if I will not hear my alarm. I worry if someone will try to break in. I worry late at night at work that one of my elderly neighbors will forget to shut something off and start a fire, or my neighbor who drinks too much will do the same and start a fire. I worry that I may forget something and start a fire. I worry about my car leaking fluid. I worry that I'll leave work and have a flat tire. I worry I'll hit a deer on my way to work.

The list goes on and on.

I worry about a lot of different things, depending on the time and place.

              1) Did I leave my flat iron plugged in?
              2) Did I set my alarm for the right time?
              3) Did I remember to start the dishwasher before I crawled into bed?
              4) Did I remember to fill up my water bottle before leaving for school?
              5) Do I have the right books and stuff for today?
              6) What the hell was that noise I just heard outside? (This one especially if I'm home alone)
              7) Did I have any homework that I forgot to do?

              The list is pretty long.

I'm mostly paranoid about two things: 1) locking my car. I always hit the button, forget I did, check it, etc. I'm sure my neighbors love that. 2) Losing my ring. I am terrified that I'm going to lose it, flush it down the toilet, etc.

Decades after I left school, I still occassionally dream that I am trying to do some long essay which has to be handed in in an hours time or they will take away the qualifications I gained at school.
