I want to put together a tape of various Christmas songs and carols toplay over the festive time.I'm starting now so I have the time to find the songs and record them I know it is going to take time.

What should I put on my tape? What is your favourite or even the ones you hate?

I am definately not having "Frosty the Snowman" it gets on my nerves (Memories of working retail over Christmas when the generic muzac tape played that and Little Drummer Boy and I wish it could be Christmas Every day on a neverending loop starting in October!

I'm not a huge fan of traditional carols, but I've always liked "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear".

That was one they didn't play over and over again on the retail Musak back in the day.

I probably should not admit this, but I like Merry Christmas From the Family by Robert Earl Keen. I just think it's funny and human and very sweet.

Some people hate the song "Christmas Wrapping" by the Waitresses, but I love it just because it's so different from the average Christmas songs I'm used to.

                      Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses
Step into Christmas by Elton John
                      Father Christmas by the Kinks
                      Merry Axemas (X-mas?) by Slade

                      For something more mellow,
Thank God It's Christmas by Queen

You'll also never go wrong with Feed the World.

For a new kick on classic songs, may I suggest Chicago XXV (25). Chicago (a.k.a. CTA) covered several carols and did a god job with most of them.

I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas-Gayla Peevey is one of my favorites. I also like Belleau Woods by Garth Brooks. Not really a Christmas song, but is about Christmas Eve during WWII.

Hey, RK, I know at least half of those songs you mentioned (including Mummer's Dance -- love Loreena McKennett) Maybe more, if I heard the actual melody. A lot of them have been done by Mannheim Steamroller, which is an awesome new age instrumental group that has several Christmas albums out that are all very good. I'd recommend any of their songs (or whole albums.)

                              I love Coventry Carol!

Hmm, let's see...what about Mary Did You Know, Breath of Heaven, and...Carol of the Bells? Especially Carol of the Bells as performed by Celtic Woman.
