On the subject of not being told about family members...

I had an uncle by marriage I didn't know about...until he was dying.

At family get-togethers, most of the time my aunt D couldn't make it because of her work schedule. So it was always "D can't make it." It was NEVER "D and T can't make it." Never.

I was shocked speechless when I found out she was married. If anything, I always assumed she was divorced.
