  • wedding capelet?

i'm getting married in early december and around these parts, it tends to get a little chilly (but who knows this year. it's the first of october and it's 90 degrees).
while indoors, i have a feeling i'm gonna be getting a little cold. my dress is strapless. i was thinking about getting something akin to this, but in a dark navy blue velvet lined with a light yellow silk or something...and maybe a little longer and less stiff.

ANYWHO...does anyone here know where i can find such a thing?

Have you tried a wedding place like Davids Bridal? With winter right around the corner, theyre bound to have all kinds of warm add ons.

Also, if all else fails, check out Etsy.com and see if you can commission someone to make one for you. It looks simple and its not much material.

        I second Etsy.

Talk to Elizabeth Dye, of The English Department. She makes beautiful pieces, and works in gorgeous materials.

If I had the time, I would knit you some lace (I always am looking for excuses to knit more lace). In worsted weight lace can be surprisingly snuggly. Just a suggestion for when you're cruising Etsy.

She's on Etsy... I just don't remember whether she's listed under her name or her company's name.

She's a wedding clothing designer who does dresses and accessories.

I would just check around stores that sell formal wear, they'd probably have something that would work.

Unfortunately this isn't necessarily correct. Even at the bridal stores they don't have a lot. (This ticked me off, because I had limited selection if I wanted straps on mine, forget something that could actually be worn in a church, and they didn't sell jackets at the time, they had started carrying them when I picked my dress up, which is lucky or else I would have been told to get off white for the jacket too. You'd think that church weddings were a large enough percentage to make selling for those worth it in $$ terms.)

What kind of fabric do you need for it? If it doesn't have to be a satin, try going to the mall and looking around at stores like Suzy Shier, or other store selling to young women who want clothes that are modelled after business clothes, but aren't actually formal.

Maybe the majority of churches don't have a problem with strapless? They must not, because 90-95% of the dresses I've seen in magazines have been strapless.

Some denominations require shoulders and upper arms to be covered. It's usually church-specific, but I know a lot of RCC churches won't marry you if you're wearing strapless for the ceremony.

Even when the church doesn't have a rule about it, a lot of brides like to try to dress in clothing that they would normally be willing to wear to church. Mainly those who belong to more conservative denominations, or who have relatives who did. It's why most brides wear shawls, because if the church doesn't have any rules (and even a lot of the time when they do), you don't have to worry about "OMG, I'm in church and not dressed nicely! What am I doing in church in clothing like this?" (Yes, I know, most people don't have my social anxiety .)
