  • So I took Whiskey's suggestion and bought a pair of these crazy looking things

http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/pro...ucts_KSO_f.cfm Picked them up at Broadway On The Beach at Comfortable Soles.

And then I wore them to Brookgreen Gardens and tromped all around in them ALL DAY. Grass, sand, woods, swamp terrain, and even asphalt and gravel.

And now I need a cigarette. And I don't even smoke.

My toenails don't even hurt. I hike all day in a pair of boots and my toes feel like they are on fire from just the light pressure of the top of the shoe. My ankles ache and my legs are heavy. Not today. My feet were not even sweaty. They were not even remotely sore.

I'm a freaking convert. Seriously. I could feel the terrain, but could step on just about any sort of rock or protrusion without it hurting at all. They are weightless. Several people asked me a lot of questions about them, because let's face it, they are freaky looking shoes.

So, Whiskey, thanks for the suggestion.

They're good for running too? Hmmmm the military maps your feet now and gets you running shoes special for *your foot*, but I may still look into those for hiking etc when I get in. They look interesting and since two people here now recommend them, I guess I'll have to!

Running barefoot is really, really good for your feet/legs. Vibrams lets your run as barefoot as possible without being so.

Way I understand it (and have experienced it) your feet and legs have all kinds of stablizer muscles. You use your toes independantly when you walk, thus working out those muscles. Your footstrike on the ground is very different barefoot than with shoes. I personally also think the interaction of your bare foot on the ground massages and manipulates your foot when you walk.

All that goes away when you put on shoes. Particularly "good quality" hiking or running shoes. All those muscles atrophy and the constant foot massage is gone. You cannot interact properly with your terrain. Your feet and legs have to struggle to function.

When I would go back to school after a summer barefoot, I was in agony for weeks as I had to adjust to the shoes and the different stride. And even now, as I've stated, I go on a serious hike for a day and my feet feel like molten lumps of aching lead.

You don't need all that "protection" and "support." You need to let your body work the way nature intended. A friend of mine is trying out the barefoot running thing and she's finding out you get a very different workout.

If I lived in a different area where it was safe to run barefoot, I might do it. I remember when I was in Israel, I would go running on the beach once a week, and I always felt amazing after. I always did it barefoot. I love to hike, but as you said, my feet always hurt after hiking all day in boots. I've also noticed after my daily run and/or walk, the balls of my feet and my toes *hurt*, even with my "good" running shoes.

I guess I'm definitely going to have to invest in a pair of these when I have the money to do so.

Well, since I am now so thrilled with the things, I'm reading all about them and I came on this very good review about the same style I bought.

This person likes the shoes, but she did have quite a bit of adjustment to go since she never went barefoot and had to build up muscles and let her toes adjust to the more natural spread.

I go seriously barefoot and have done so all my life, so there was no adjustment for me. My only adjustment was over within about twenty minutes, and that was to get used to the feel of fabric between my toes. My toes are already splayed out when I walk, so it wasn't different for me. Stepping on rocks was no problem, either, as not only are my feet extremely tough, but instinctively and instantly react to terrain and things that might injure me. The big stone I stepped on today did not hurt me at all.

So I would recommend going barefoot whenever possible while you are working on getting accustomed to these.

i've been thinking about getting a pair. i see people in the city with them and while they look goofy...they also look sooo comfy. i loathe shoes. my only issue is price. i've yet to see a pair under $50 and while they're probably worth it...i just can't spend more than about $30 on a pair of shoes. oh well. maybe i'll actually break down and get a pair eventually.

I don't mind them so much, they'd be alright for training.

I really really wish someone in my family could afford to get me a pair of these for my birthday. I would wear them everywhere (except work). It'd be awesome

RK, you lift, right? Tell me how they feel compared to regular shoes.

If you dont lift completely ignore that.

No, sorry, Whiskey, only thing I really lift with any regularity is a five year old, a heavy guitar, and bags of compost.

I'm supposed to be doing freeweights and I do that barefooted when I do it. I do most things barefooted.

The cheapest pair I saw was online, they have a new style (The Sprint, I think?) you could get for seventy bucks or so. Still, cheaper than a good pair of leather hikers. Mine were in the eighty five dollar range. I'll look around and see if I see any cheaper and give you all a heads up.

EDIT: I so far don't see them under fifty, but here they are under seventy. Not bad.

Those look like the prosthetic hobbit feet the actors wore in the Lord of the Rings films.

But if they feel good I guess they're worth it, huh?

Replace your basic training shoes as soon as you hit AIT. The PX will have sections based on flat-normal-high arched feet. I think it's the high arch shoes basic shoes that are notorious for foot issues.

I'm so intrigued by those new shoes, but I don't run so I thought they wouldn't do much for me. I do like to go hiking, though, so maybe once I have some money...

Okay, I have a few questions.

                          - How do you wear socks with these shoes? Do they make special socks to go with them?

                          - How are they in below-freezing weather?

                          - How are they in an urban environment (walking all day)?

                          - Are they good on cobblestones?

These look so comfortable. I have always hated wearing shoes but going barefoot is not always an option , especially in they city. I also work in an environment where I have to wear steel caps for safety

I checked the website and they have a distributor here in Australia, so I may just get myself a pair. Barefoot without being barefoot - sounds like heaven to me
