Today makes 11 years that my [step] Grandfather died.
The circumstances of his death were horrible. The police raided my grandmothers home in search of my druggie uncle. When my grandfather asked for a warrant, he was arrested. This was a 70 something yr old man, in ill health, he posed no threat to the police. They put him in handcuffs and he collapsed in the street. Massive heart attack brought on by stress. The cops did nothing. They didnt even call for an ambulance. Passers by did.
My cousin was arrested as he was trying to help his grandfather off the floor, to get him help. The police said he was interfering. We had to take up a collection to get him out of jail in addition to paying for funeral expenses.
My grandmother got to watch as her husband lay dying in the street. This part hurts the most. I havent seen my grandmother smile, a real smile for 11 years. I would do anything to have her smile and not see the hurt that lives behind it.
Sounds like movie, i know. I promise Im not adding any drama. It really happened. To make matters worse, his children sued the city b/c of the cops behavior. They won. Unfortunately, my grandmother and my grandfather werent married...so none of his possessions went to her.
His greedy children came and literally, took it all. AND they won literally millions of dollars in the suit against the city. They gave my grandmother nothing, though thay had been together for over 30 years (common law doesnt exist in this particular state).
My grandmother lives tucked away in some government subsidized projects. Struggling with everyday life, and none of them care.
Id give anything to see her smile.
