  • Does anyone know this series?

My boyfriend described to me a series of books that sounds really awesome, but he cannot remember the titles or author.

The series takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. The methods of apocalypse are many, and include defense satellites going nuts and shooting anything that moves too fast and random electronics, and people using prehistoric DNA to resurrect some sea creatures that turn out to have psychic powers and emit a field that causes all mammals above a certain size to walk towards the ocean.

The first book takes place in Australia, the second book in the US, and the third is a melding of the two.

There is a culture in the Rockies where the nobility fly biplanes and has biplane duels.

There is also a sentient nano-tech ring around the sun.

(I sorta skimmed them but I can't tell if it's what you're looking for.)

I asked my brother, who is a big sci-fi fan, but he hasn't answered me yet.

Krivak is correct, it is the "Greatwinter" series, and it is pretty good. Well written, and some very novel ideas, but not especially happy.
