  • Stores open on Thanksgiving...

    * Disclaimer: This is not directed towards service that may or will be required tomorrow, nor is it directed towards any health / emergency services.

I am appalled at these large chain stores that are forcing their employees to work on Thanksgiving day.

I don't have an issue with small Ma&Pa stores being open since the people making the decisions are the ones who are working but large chain stores like Walmart. Executives are making these decisions and you guessed it - chances are that they will NOT be working tomorrow.

If you're going to make these decisions that prevent your employees from enjoying a very important holiday (in America) then be willing to work these front lines with them. Don't sit at your fully catered function in the lap of luxury.

I propose that no one shop at these stores on Thanksgiving day to show the execs that there is no demand for shopping at these locations on these days. Tell them we feel family is more important than profits. Stores did just fine for decades being closed on Thanksgiving day, they don't need to start now.

Here's what I've found out so far:
These stores will be OPEN on Thanksgiving day:
    Walmart
    Bass Pro Shops
    K-Mart
    Sears
    Pathmark
    A&P

These stores will be CLOSED on Thanksgiving day:
    Target
    Publix
    Sams Club
    Best Buy
    Tractor Supply Store
    Macy's

I wouldn't be surprised if some of those chains HAVE to be open because of their pharmacies.

I don't know if it's all A&P stores, but the Pathmark I used to work at is open tomorrow.

Mickey D's will be open on Thanksgiving. I have no idea why. What do they think? That some goober is gonna come in & order a Big Mac with turkey?
Kind of funny that Wal-Mart will be open & Sam's Club will be closed cause both stores are related to each other.

Starbucks is open from 5:30am (their usual opening time) - 5pm. At least they get out early enough to have dinner. The last few years (since I've been in my apartment) I've stopped there on my way to my aunt's house. It's my usual Starbucks that I go to at least a couple times a week (more, lately, but I'm trying to cut back) and I always tip well when I go there on a holiday (and normally I pay with a gift card so I don't tip on a regular basis).

In honor of the Thanksgiving Day holiday, the clearance swamp will close two hours earlier than normal, at 8 pm.

Most of the clearance swamp pharmacies will be closed, but most, if not all, of the ones that'll be open are in my state.

Oh yeah, and we have a free giveaway with a $25 purchase (I think). It'll be busy, unfortunately.

One of the reasons Wally World is open is that they sell turkeys, not just fresh and frozen but also ready to cook (fully dressed, stuffing and all) and some locations even have them cooked.

I can kinda see Walgreens, CVS, because of the pharmacies (I'm on the fence with this one - maybe very limited hours, 80noon or 1?). The Walmarts here don't have pharmacies (as far as I know) but Sams club does. Target and Publix have them, too.

McDonalds - that's funny. I'm sure BK and other fast food places are open, too. I guess not everyone cooks a big dinner that day.

Starbucks - can you imagine all those caffeine junkies going without their cop o' Joe?

I'm sure most of the customers who do shop tomorrow will say comments like "I can't believe you're open today!" If you can't believe it - WHY THE HELL ARE YOU SHOPPING??

I worked at a grocery store that had this, too but we were still not open on Thanksgiving. People picked them up the day before and heated them up at home.

Around here in the Northern Virginia town I live in, the Mickey D's is open, a few of the Taco Bells, Wendys, and Burger King.

The local mall is open too.

I know the Gaming Store I used to work at is open. (The only day it's closed is Christmas). I've never worked on Thanksgiving, but I've heard from others who have that customers have been known to come in and give Thanksgiving Day dinners to the employees.

As I am sick with an ear infection, I will probably not be going anywhere. However, if I'm up to it, my husband has said he will take me to Cracker Barrel if I want.

From 8:30 AM until 10:00 AM tomorrow morning, he'll be at the aquatics center participating in the Turkey & Gravy Splash the place holds every Thanksgiving Day. It's the only time the gym will be open & you can get your land/water exercise in.

I have a couple of comments here. One as a mod, and one as a member.

As mod: Lets keep this thread from veering into any sort of social activism or boycott requests. Topics like that are for fratching.

                            Thanks

As a member: I can speak for CVS a bit because my son works there. At his store, it's completely voluntary to work tomorrow and they get paid at time and a half. He volunteered to work, along with many of his co-workers. I'm not sure what happens if a store wouldn't get enough volunteers. I assume they'd force people to work, and likely base it on seniority. Yes, that would suck.

I work 10 hours tomorrow. I'm not in retail, but in a call center. I work from home and it's strictly voluntary. I get paid at time and a half, plus I get paid for the holiday itself...so if you look at it that way, I'm getting double time and a half. On Christmas Day, I get paid double time, plus I get paid for the holiday itself, which makes it triple time. On Christmas, we also get a comp time certificate for whatever hours worked, which is like bonus PTO time. If I work a 10 hour shift, I get an additional 10 hours of PTO for the following year. Pretty sweet deal.

Granted, I do feel bad for emps who are forced to work, but many of us are not forced. For me, it's strictly financial. And lets be honest: if people didn't shop on these days, they wouldn't be open. So really, who's to blame?

I worked at an A&P grocery store in high school and they were always open until early afternoon (2? 3?) on Thanksgiving. It didn't really bother me, because it was short shifts and usually filled by volunteers. The majority of people who came in were grabbing one or two things they had forgotten/run out of, so it felt like we were open for a reason.

I don't know why a store with a pharmacy would have to be open. Maybe I could see a pharmacy near a major hospital being open (to give meds to ER patients), but the vast majority of people can go to the pharmacy the day before or after Thanksgiving.
