I don't know why a store with a pharmacy would have to be open. Maybe I could see a pharmacy near a major hospital being open (to give meds to ER patients), but the vast majority of people can go to the pharmacy the day before or after Thanksgiving.
You can scratch pretty much half of the day after Thanksgiving. At the swamp, every (and I do mean every) available cash register is used to ring up customers. This includes pharmacy when they open at 8 am and probably runs until early afternoon or so. So if you come in to pick up meds in the morning you may find yourself behind a gaggle of Black Friday shoppers.

Otherwise I would suspect pharmacies are open on Thanksgiving for the same reason the rest of the store is: $$$$$

I can think of very little that would be worse than being sick and having to pick up a prescription on black friday, only to find the pharmacy register clerk is being forced to pander to the black friday crowd.

I'd pretty much have to be at deaths door in order to put up with that. Ugh.

Me, too. Oh Gawd, would that SUCK.

My mom gets either time and a half or double time tomorrow as I believe she has to work. It's not voluntary.

Of course, my mom works at a veteran's home...

To be fair, they try to rotate days off around holidays so that usually if you work Thanksgiving, you're off Christmas, or vice versa. So you're not constantly working the holidays.

me thinks stores like cvs, walgreens and rite aid arent going to have large crowds early black friday morning. ive worked it once, and maybe 5 people came in. the deals arent great.

but i can see how a store like walmart or target, that have much bigger sales that could happen. but like peppergirl said, they shouldnt have to ring any of those sales

I get paid at time and a half, plus I get paid for the holiday itself...
That's pretty sweet. My company stores are closed Thanksgiving and Christmas, but those are the only two days during the year they are closed. Other major holidays they generally close early (or open late, on New Year's Day...or at least they used to; not sure if they still do). If you work on a holiday you get time and a half, but if you are full time you also get another day off during the week, so you still get a "holiday," it just might not be on the actual day. I don't recall ever being given the option to volunteer, though. The only time I've ever seen them ask for volunteers is for inventory (which is an overnight thing).

I agree...if the reasoning is that people need to be able to get their meds, then by that logic the pharmacy should never be allowed to close.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of those chains HAVE to be open because of their pharmacies.
Publix and Target both have in-store pharmacies and both are closed.
              Don't wanna; not gonna.

I myself will be working tomorrow, as it is my regular Thursday day shift. Yes, The Bar is open, for its normal hours. And that's fine by me. We're a restaurant. We're a bar. We don't close for Thanksgiving. There are lots of people in this transient tourist town who don't have family or close friends to be with, and a place like ours is a good place where people like this can gravitate towards. Also, tourists in town during the holiday would be aghast to find that there is no place for them to go.

And yes, in addition to our full menu, we WILL be offering a Thanksgiving dinner. And I expect, due to the football games, to be somewhat busy...and naturally get the "you're working on a holiday, that's terrible" pity tips, in addition to my usual tips.

My plans tomorrow are very simple:

Go to work a little early to make sure everything is stocked up, so when it is time for me to leave, I'm gone.
                Work.
At some point during work, early in the day (so as not to interfere with my later dinner), order my standard workplace T-Day dinner: the turkey dinner with no turkey, sub extra stuffing and extra gravy for the stuffing. YUMMY!
                Make money.
Hope we aren't too busy when the second bartender comes in so that I can get to my friend's dinner at a decent hour. If we ARE busy, I'll be there till the third, closing bartender gets there, and I'll be rather late to my friend's dinner, but that's part of the job.
Go to my friend's dinner, eat well, drink well, enjoy my the company of my friends, maybe even watch some football.
                Go home with Megan Fox.
                Sleep.
                Go to work Friday morning.

And while some people may think it sucks that I work on Thanksgiving, it is, as I said, part of my regular weekly schedule. That same regular weekly schedule is going to give me one hell of a New Year's, as New Year's Eve is on a Friday, and that means once I am done with my day shift on NYE, probably 8:00 pm at the very latest, I will most likely have the entire rest of the weekend off.

Three nights to celebrate the New Year? Yeah, that's the flip side of the coin of having my set schedule. And I love it! So yeah, I'll work Turkey Day, NO PROBLEM!

Mickey D's will be open on Thanksgiving. I have no idea why.

McDonalds - that's funny. I'm sure BK and other fast food places are open, too. I guess not everyone cooks a big dinner that day.
I am not even vaguely surprised by this. I am sure there are more than enough people that are going to eat that "food" tomorrow.

By the way, my condescending tone is for the fast food itself, of which I am not a fan. I do not, however, have a problem with people eating it if that's what they want tomorrow. Not everyone likes the traditional T Day dishes (I don't care for turkey, for instance, and can't stand pumpkin pie or pecan pie), so if they want to eat something else, by all means, more power to them.

McDonalds is only open until 2 pm today, supposedly. Well, the one closest to where I live. I saw it on their marquee the last time I drove past that way.

My restuarant is closed for Thanksgiving. Thank goodness because I love Thanksgiving and I would hate to work, besides who wants tacos for Thanksgiving? I did have one person call and ask if we would be open on Thursday. I am surprised that the fast food places are going to be open because when I worked the burger joints almost 17 years ago they would close on Thanksgiving! Man things have changed!!

As a member: I can speak for CVS a bit because my son works there. At his store, it's completely voluntary to work tomorrow and they get paid at time and a half. He volunteered to work, along with many of his co-workers. I'm not sure what happens if a store wouldn't get enough volunteers. I assume they'd force people to work, and likely base it on seniority. Yes, that would suck.
I can see (and respect) the voluntary aspect and I really respect the time-and-a-half aspect, very few companies do that today.

But your bar seems to be non-corporate. I'm sure if you needed the day off the management would respect that? (Of course, you'd miss out on a lot of tips!).

My husband and I are going out to lunch today to an Indian buffet. Who says you need a traditional turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes dinner on Thanksgiving? The Indian buffet is run by, well, Indians, who don't really observe Thanksgiving, so it's just another day for them. The food is great and the place will probably be empty so it works out great for both parties; we don't have to cook or do dishes, and they get some business on a day when they'll probably be pretty slow otherwise.
