In the spirit of TMI I have to use super ultra heavy plus suck every kind of moisture out of you type tampons, or I would be leaking everywhere. Anything less is next to useless for me.

The Pearl tampons saved me back when I was a teen and still mestruating because that little extra material on the string bought me just a few extra minutes if I couldn't get in the bathroom right away.

For some of us, there is no option other than super super plus tampons. I was going through a super tampon in less than 2 hours. Albeit, that would be why I said f it and went on the Depo shot and have been period free for nearly 7 years, and will do whatever it takes to never have a period again if I can get away with it.

At one time I needed the ultra because I was practically hemorrhaging. I think those days are gone. I just thought it was funny our shelf looked like it had been raided, as if there were some kind od bizarre scavenger hunt. And I prefer no applicator; it's easier, creates less trash. As for bleaching? There's no bleach in it, so who cares? I use bleached paper towels, etc, bleach for cleaning. Whatever. I'm still alive.

You put bleach in there yourself? That isn't safe.

Maybe TMI, but this is kind of a TMI thread anyway...I have to have the applicators, my fingers are too short to use anything w/o.

Jeeze, if someone is bleeding so heavily they soak up a super in an hour or two, you might want to get yourself checked for fibroids. They can cause some serious bleeding. I mean "make you lightheaded" kind of bleeding.

I asked my doctor about why my bleeding was so bad, and (this was my old doctor who wasn't so great) he said it was because I didn't take keep my girly bits clean enough , that's why I would be too sick to eat or walk, and would have to keep a box of overnight pads in my purse because I needed them every 3 hours or so. Turns out, cysts and blood clots are normal in my family, my new doctor prescribed me some vitamins that help blood flow and I'm doing some exercises that seem to help, but it's still bad.
I haven't been able to use tampons since about three years after I started having my period, the grossness was too...gross for them? Either way, they did nothing for me.

I hope you finally find some of your tampons though, they are at my local Walgreens and Rite Aid, but not Walmart or Meijers.

My mother had the same issue with heavy bleeding ...so I'm just following the genetic path, and apparently my youngest daughter is having fun with that now....sigh.

And you ladies with the heavy flow, don't worry. It will sort itself out eventually.

I only need pads about every other month, or less often, now...Bliss.

Kotex super plus are the ones I use.

I still bleed super, super heavy - although a bit less so now that I'm back on the pill (which I'm too old for, but that's another story for another day).

I highly recommend this brand to anyone who bleeds heavily. I've never had nearly the same luck with OB, Tampax or Playtex. The only thing I would caution against is don't get the new U design, that comes in a little compact applicator. The product isn't nearly as 'sturdy' or absorbent.

I feel so blessed. No, seriously! I just have to use Playtex pads-- tampons aren't recommended by my mother, I listen to her because I take after her in many, many ways. Like, scary many. Dad has to listen carefully to tell us apart on the phone if we don't give any other cues. I usually start off with a cutesy "Hi Daddy," to prevent confusion
Anyway, back on topic; I consider myself to have a normal flow if I don't eat anything too funky for too long during the month, about eight pads or less in a given period.

no it's the american thing of "oh it's bleached it must be cleaner/sterile" never mind that where the damn things go is quite bacteria laden

at the risk of TMI- the two things I use:

                              Diva cup

                              Sea sponges

neither have a risk of TSS as the sponges are to be used damp, and the cup doesn't absorb anything-as long as they're changed when they need to be-no leaks either-as in I wear white at times with no worries.
ooOOo I loved my diva cup, I got it about a year before I went onto total suppression and I wish I had heard of it years before that. [well actually I would have loved either total suppression or a hysterectomy back in 1980]

There can be a little learning curve with it, and you have to be willing to occasionally go spelunking if it gets shoved in a bit too far as you learn the optimal spot to settle it into but it fits and feels better than tampons [no dry feeling] and the disposable menstrual cups that are more like diaphrams [I always felt that they were going to spill out] and you might want to wear an ultrathin pad until you are confident in wearing it.

I had 2 of them, so I always had a clean one to change into [i preferred to pop in a clean one instead of emptying out and replacing - just carry the fresh one in a ziploc baggie with several individually wrapped wet ones to clean your hands in public toilets]

LOL yeah that's a dumb idea, it ain't gonna look pretty when you're done with it.

Me too! And sea sponge/cup idea squicks me out too....I don't want to use anything reusable, I want to take the thing and throw it away.

But if anyone cares there is a company that does reusable stuff....they have been a customer at TWO places I've worked. http://www.gladrags.com/ and they feature the same Diva cups and sea sponges mentioned previously. Plus pads.
                                Instead Softcup is disposable.
