    4. Make certified photocopies of all important documents, especially insurance and ID. Keep those copies in a bank lockbox or similar location.
Every year I make a point to mail a copy of my insurance (car, home, etc.) plus other important documents to my parents over 1,000 miles away.

But in today's age we can also make then available anywhere for us. You can scan the documents and then email them to yourself (if you use a web based server like gMail and don't store the emails on your PC) or another password-protected file storage service.

Thanks for your concern, everyone! I really appreciate it.

      Final tally:

      9 apartments gutted

15 apartments damaged to varying degrees

      31 people homeless

And why? Because someone left a pot on the stove. In other news, reading the newspaper article about this today, I learned that in 2001 an arsonist set fire to one of the buildings here and the result was a blaze that took out 12 apartments. In March of this year, a discarded cigarette in the landscaping mulch caused a fire that damaged two apartments.

On a side note - those are some good pictures. What camera did you use?
I used the same one I use for all my photo shoots (you'll find several linked to in the Check it Out! section). It's a Kodak Easyshare Z712 IS. It takes great pictures about half the time... the other half they wash out and I don't notice until I get them posted online. It's also lousy for night shots. It does the trick most of the time though.

Drive it like it's a county car.
