  • My bf and I are thinking of taking a big step...

....and getting hooked on an online game. Definitely WoW-esque.....but hopefully finding one that is cheaper (or free)

So, my fellow CSers.....what do you guys and gals suggest?

(Sorry, I know this topic has been asked about before...I will admit I was too lazy to search)

I think Lord of the Rings Online is free to play now. I remember playing a free trial of it for a few days and thinking, "If I wanted to play WoW, I'd play WoW." It was very similar to WoW from the bit I played of it.

        *cough*

Me and hubby got married on Runescape.. I wore a wedding gown and he gave me a ring....virtually of course. One of our RL friends owned a book that let him read wedding vows and religious stuff. It was soo cute. Random people were passing through, realizing what was happening and giving us gifts and gold. Lol.

You're honestly not going to find a really decent MMO without the $15/month fee. Which honestly isn't that much.

LOTRO is basically a WoW mod that makes it needlessly complicated. Its not a bad game, but it pretty much is WoW with more realistic terrain but much uglier character models. WoW has a rather mild learning curve, especially now. LOTRO, not so much.

Free 2 play mmos is just asking for grief and misery too, to be honest. Remember, free means anyone can play it. Anyone is an asshole. >.>

Much as I hate to see anyone else roped into the darkness, there's enough people that play WoW on here that you'd have someone to get you started in game if you asked about.

If one of you grabs WoW than uses their account to refer the other through the referal program you can get something like triple exp for 90 days whenever you play together.

Ugh, I'm sales pitching this too much for a game I view as a nessacary evil to tide me over to The Old Republic. >.>

Fallen Earth is pretty good too if you're into the whole post apocalyptic thing. TTO and I played it for a while until real life got too busy

I've had pretty good value for money out of Guild Wars, but I'd really advocate waiting for the second version - due out next year. GW is buy the game and free to play from there. It's had power creep in an upwards direction for a while, over several expansions. I've had a huge amount of playing time, though. Main downfall is it's on the old side, but it's still very very pretty.

Dungeons and Dragons Online is now free to play. It was .. ok. Most of the others I know about are pay or have already been mentioned.

Thanks for all the advice Yeah, I think we have accepted we will have to pay the $15/month fee....that may cut into the booze funds.

This requires more thought, but so far I think WoW or D&D will win.

I've heard some pretty negative things about the D&D MMO, for what it's worth. Hubby and I never actually played it, but we have friends who played it and said it got really old and boring really fast. At least it's free to play now, so if you do try it and get tired of it after a while you can quit without losing part of your subscription.

The new WoW expansion is really nice. It made most of the game less grindy and more interesting. Quests used to be, "Go kill 10 raptors." "Now go kill raptors and bring me 5 of their heads" (and you'd be surprised at how many raptors don't actually have heads.) "Now go kill the raptor leader." And after each one you'd have to go turn the previous one in before doing the next one, which involved a lot of running back and forth. They really streamlined it, from what I've seen, so that there are less of those kinds of quests in the first place, and when there are, there's less running back and forth involved.

This is for Azeroth. They haven't made any such changes for Outlands or Northrend quests. *sigh* Although they have made it easier to get from 60 - 80 so you're spending less time there.

Also, if you're going to do WoW, I highly recommend a PvE or "Normal" server. Trying to play on a PvP server almost led me to quit the game altogether.

Hence why I said it made "most of the game" less grindy. I haven't been to Outlands in a while, but my husband was leveling there a bit last week and said it was like running into a brick wall compared to the new Azeroth quests.

And, I totally agree on playing on a non-PvP server, regardless of which MMO you get. In WoW, you can always turn PvP on if you're on a PvE server, so you can still PvP pretty much anywhere you want (just only with other people who are PvP flagged, not with just anyone.) There are a lot of jerks out there who think they're awesome for being level 80 and killing level 10 characters, so having the option to turn PvP off is really nice.

I think we're gonna go the WoW route, lol. Now we just have to decide when to start the madness.

Here is a decent list of games to play.

LOTRO (Lord of the Rings online) = Free to play. Does have pay to play options. Has a nice veriety of how the F2p and P2P works. http://www.lotro.com/betasignup/faq.html

Guild wars = It's free to play once you buy the retail copy. Now you can get all 3 guildwars games (Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall) for around 30ish dollars. Please keep in mind, when they first came out, they were $50 each. I would know..I have been playing since launch. :P The expansion GW: Eye of the North is worth buying too, because GW2 will be comeing out within the next year I have heard. (i have inside sources) GW:EN connects GW to GW2 and it's going to be wonderful.

League of Legends = I have not played it, but have several friends who do. It's very PVP oriented. It's also FREE.
I can only please one person a day, today isn't your day, and tomorrow doesn't look good either.

When someone asks you a stupid question, give them a stupid answer.
