Something I like to do in my capacity as a moderator on this site is see how fast I can throw spammers off of here. And boy howdy you have no idea how many spammers, bots, and trolls try to get on here on literally an hourly basis.

Sometimes it's like playing Space Invaders.

So anyways, I see a "welcome to our newest member" pop up, so I go to investigate them. I do that to all new members if I see them. I may have done it to you, if you're newish. Just want to make sure

Long story short, what I found was so many hits for porn sites that I actually had to scroll to look at them all. The last one, however was not a porn site.

It was "4 Causes of Yeast Infections".

First time I ever blew a drink out of my nose over a spammer.

One actually managed to post before I got him...an unusual occurance...and I can only think that happened because they come at us so fast we missed him.

I was a mod at a site a long time ago, and I think I know what you're talking about. I still have nightmares about those images.

Oh yeah. I think one of our members may have pissed someone off -- not sure the details -- but we got flooded. I was only a moderator at the time, and as such, I couldn't do IP bans. That would have stopped a lot of them from getting back in. When the dust finally settled, I think I had banned more people in that one day than in my previous three years as a mod.

As for the spammers of today, most of them make themselves ridiculously easy to spot, and I ban them before they even get a chance to post. And even if they do, it's not like they'll ever get approved.

If only they knew how much of their time we were wasting...

Problem is, there's enough people out there stupid enough to make spamming profitable.

And we are curing the disease instead of looking at eliminating the cause of the disease.

For me the solution to spam is to attack the spammer's clientel, the ones that sell all those "miracle solutions"... Nothing hurts more than killing their bank accounts and "taking care of" their funds...
