I made some Au Gratin potatoes with Christmas dinner, from scratch. They went over very, very well.

OK, but I don't have measurements. Butter a glass baking dish. Slice maybe 5, 6 potatoes 1/4" thick. Place a third in a layer on bottom of dish. Dot with butter and sprinkle with salt, pepper, some thinly sliced onions, and flour (maybe 2 tablespoons?). Repeat. Top with last layer of potatoes (plain). Fill dish to top of potatoes with whole milk or mixture of milk and cream. Bake at 350 for an hour until potatoes are tender and sauce is bubbly.Quoth Peppergirl View PostRecipe? Anyone? Also - I don't cook well. Please dumb it down accordingly.

The recipe my mom uses is similar, but with a couple of changes:
1. Instead of a milk mixture or milk/cream mixture, she uses a can of concentrated mushroom soup diluted with some milk.
2. After the potatoes have softened, she puts a layer of shredded cheddar over top it and puts it under the broiler to crisp it.
