  • Mom,let me give the directions!!!

Today her therapist showed up after she asked for me or my brother, who's visiting for a few days & staying with Mom,to meet her.Mom had complained bitterly about how stupid this woman was,she couldn't follow directions.

Well, turned out Mom couldn't tell her which direction to go from 344 & 66 (west),told her things like "Turn at the green house" (which one?),has no clue of the mileages between turns, doesn't know the road names except for Northview Trail (her road) & Barton so she couldn't say "Turn left on Saddle Spur East".The poor woman ended up on Windmill Road & Mom just said "Go left, you'll run into a dirt road".Techically correct, but it's the back road to Moriarty, the opposite direction.

My brother & I apologized to her & I gave her my number.

Sometime in the next couple of days I'm going to have a talk with Mom about how she should never give directions,"I know you want to be independent but dammit,I'm the Realtor & I've lived here for 15 years,I know where everything is at & giving precise directions is my job,you can't even say north, south, east or west because you don't know."

I love my mother dearly,I wouldn't have bought her the house if I didn't,but dammit she should leave some things to me.

Here's an idea for consideration. Write up directions to her house from some of the major roads in the area, and give it to her to keep near the phone. She can feel independant, and have something to refer to when she needs it.

I did something like that for my grandmother's VCR and TV so she wouldn't have to call me or my Dad when she wanted to tape something.

Mom's like that - NO sense of direction. She can't give directions, and she can't follow 'em either.

I had to admit this made me laugh a little because even though my parents have lived in the same house for the last 30 years, whenever I overhear Mom giving somebody directions to the house, she tells them to turn onto a totally different street that would ultimately lead them in the opposite direction. No matter how many times I've told her she's getting the 2 street names mixed up, she can't remember.

You wouldn't want me giving directions either. I have a pretty good sense of direction but only as far as getting there myself in concerned. Since I don't drive, I navigate by landmarks. "Turn right at the McDonald's" isn't very helpful if you can't tell them how to get to the McD's in the first place.

Thats how I usually navigate too, as its simply easier than searching for a street name. What is funny is when you live in a smallish town, and even 15 years after something has changed (in this case a hotel that was called Hotel One was bought out and renamed Hotel Two) EVERYBODY still says "Oh its just past Hotel One you can't miss it!"

I've lived 9-10 years where I am now. I can not tell you street names, because .. I don't need to know them. I can get wherever I want easy..if I am driving or in the car with somebody I can get them wherever they need to go. Directions? Not the person to ask.

Does the therapist not have access to Google?
