Certain kinds of sounds can be very soothing when you're trying to sleep. I love having the fan on in the summer for that very reason, and I don't have any signs of ADHD. My sister uses a white noise machine to help drown out the noisy idiots next door.
When you start at zero, everything's progress.

I'm not ADD or ADHD, but for the first couple of years I worked graveyard shift, I needed a tv or radio to help me sleep. Now I can sleep in peace and quiet just fine.

I am, however, afraid of the dark, so I have to wake up before it gets dark to turn a light on, and I can't sleep very well at night alone, unless lights or a TV are on.

I do want to add that the TV most likely is helping him go to sleep but it wont help him stay asleep, you may want to suggest some sort of sleep timer. I know at least some tvs have sleep timers so you can set the tv to turn off after half an hour or so, which should help the boy both get to sleep and to stay asleep as having the tv on could make it harder for him to fall into deep sleep.

Oh me either. I CANNOT sleep in total darkness; it just freaks me out way too much. And I always, always keep a flashlight by my pillow. Nothing like going to sleep with some light nearby, only to wake up later and it's pitch-black thanks to a power outage. Then you're all disoriented and freaked out and GAAAAAAHHHHH. D:

Having attention deficit is like having your very own paradox. For me, it's been like playing with the most complicated tumble-lock ever. In addition to what Kinkoid and others have said, I wish to add the paradox of: amphetamines, caffeine, and the like. Those amp you up right? well, for people such as I, amphetamines such as Ritalin help me focus and stay in one place for more than five minutes. I can switch to new tasks easier, and concentrate, and fiddle with fiddly things with which I typically wouldn't be willing to fiddle. Caffeine makes my brain petrify and I turn into a zombie-- awake, but unable to do anything. I took some caffeine 'stay-awake' pills once. NEVER. AGAIN. o__o
I don't do audio stimulation when sleeping: I'm a very restless sleeper, and I have to have a lot of blankets on me, around me, even on my head. I feel exposed otherwise.
Short of a long story: ADD/H people are not neurotypical. Thus, I am afraid to try unregulated drugs, such as E or weed. Even booze I'm gentle with. .__.
EDIT: make sure kiddos know and can learn strategies to deal with life, like ways to get themselves to sit down and study, ways to get to work on time, the ability to set their own schedule, make their own boundaries-- good luck with those. I'm still trying, and I'm almost out of university. Also, there are free, streaming, no-limit online radio stations, like di.fm and sky.fm.
