Ha, my mom is another of the "I MUST buy you something" mindset (though she did awesome this year)

I have and love my Wii. Though now it is mainly used for streaming Netflix (working form home tomorrow...so it will be used). Not a fam of too many of the games out there...so I mainly use ot to play old Zelda games. And this thread makes me wanna start playing my DS again (stupid Spirit Tracks)

You'll def find a buyer if you decide to sell.

It's been kind of rough for old-school RPG fans on recent consoles. Closest you can get on the Wii is Zelda: Twilight Princess (and upcoming Skyward Sword). As far as traditional turn-based RPGs... well, good luck.

I haven't done much downloading, but I know that Super Mario RPG is available, which still remains a fantastic game to this day.
I feel so at home in this thread.

Just wanted to echo the Zelda:TP as well as Okami. I haven't finished it since I stopped playing post-move, but I really enjoyed it. Very much like Zelda with a more traditional Japanese twist. The Paper Mario games for the Wii and before are fun as well. Sort of your typical action RPG with a classic Mario platforming twist. There are some games coming down the pipes that I think older gamers will really like, but the Wii especially hasn't had a whole lot of new blood lately.

The DS really is a breath of fresh air for oldskool players. I think I've clocked more hours on that system than any other since the Smash Bros days of the Gamecube.

To add to the DS list, look into Black Sigil. I've just started it and its art is as if FF6j and CT had an awesome, awesome lovechild. The plot doesn't seem bad so far. I saw this one game, Winds of Nostalgia, over at PAX in '09, but I haven't kept up with it to see if it was any good. I've heard that it went out of its way to act more like a traditional SNES style jRPG.

I'd love a Wii. But that's because I want my own copy of Twilight Princess. And would love to get EA Sports.

But you might trade in the console for a PSP. You can download a lot of the classics onto it (long as you have enough memory space on a card) and then you can play wherever you want.

Wii Sports and Fit are pretty cool. OH! you can set it up to watch streaming Netflix movies too. If you have a netflix account you can watch it via tv unless you already have it set up on another device.

We have it on Wii and a Roku box in our house. Anywho, Wii's not so bad. You should try the Lego games (batman, indiana jones, star wars, harry Potter)

I like Wii because i stink at what I consider "boys games" ..shooters, racing and stuffs.

While FF 6/3 isn't on there, a sequel to FF 5/2 is on there called Final Fantasy 5, The After Years. It is a great game in the style of the SNES FF games. I highly recommend it.

I'd volunteer my house as it's new home, but already have a Wii.

I'm sitting here feeling all nice & sore after an hour-long Wii Sports Resort session after work tonight. I enjoy using mine for a good way to get some exercise on our yucky, dark nights when walking outside isn't feasable.

If it's not something you'll use, I agree donating it would be a great option.

That's FF 4 ya noob. FF 5 wasn't released in NA until the Final Fantasy Anthology for Playstation in 2002 where it was packaged with FF 6.

Here's the breakdown of Original Japan release -> Original NA release:

Final Fantasy (Famicom, 1987) -> Final Fantasy (Nintendo, 1990)
Final Fantasy 2 (Famicom, 1988) -> Final Fantasy 2, Part of FF Origins (Playstation, 2003)
                  Final Fantasy 3 (Famicom, 1990) -> 3D remake (Nintendo DS, 2006)

                  Here's where it gets weird:

Final Fantasy 4 (Super Famicom, 1991) -> Final Fantasy 2* (Super Nintendo, 1991)
Final Fantasy 5 (Super Famicom, 1992) -> Final Fantasy 5, Part of Final Fantasy Anthology (Playstation, 1999)
Final Fantasy 6 (Super Famicom, 1994) -> Final Fantasy 3 (Super Nintendo, 1994)

*was actually a heavily toned down version which was released back in Japan after the NA release as FF4 EasyType)

From Final Fantasy 7 on, the numbers were identical and release dates were close together.

So here's the NA release in Chronological order with the NA names followed by the original names after in brackets.

                  FF 1
                  ------
                  FF2NA(FF4ET)
                  ----------------
                  FF3NA(FF6)
                  --------------
                  FF7
                  -------------
                  FF8
                  --------------
                  FF5
                  FF6
                  --------------
                  FF9
                  -------------
                  FF4
                  --------------
                  FF10
                  -----------
                  FF1
                  FF2
                  ------------
                  FF11 Online
                  --------------
                  FF12
                  -------------
                  FF3
                  -----------
                  FF13
                  --------------
FF14 Online (for the love of god do not buy this! save yourself from the insanity)

And you thought Temporal Mechanics was tough to figure out?

All that said, I do agree it's worth getting The After Years, but I say wait on it for a bit. There's a PSP version of Final Fantasy 4 being released that has the original game with the newer sprites seen in FF6 and Chrono Trigger and the complete version of The after Years together. (in case you're wondering, TAY was set up as a sort of episodic content on the iPhone and the Wii, so you have to purchase a fair bit to get all the game. The PSP version has it all in one package)

OOPS! That was a typo on my part.
I'd had too many beers when I posted that last night.

A question for those of you suggesting getting a DS...

Is there anything that lets you play DS games on the Wii, so you can see it up there on the bigger TV screen? Or are you condemned to that weensy little handheld screen?

Not sure if it would be right for you, but a PSP might be something to look at. If you have wireless in your house, you can get access to Playstation Network..and it has some decent games.

Right now I am playing both Final Fantasy VII, and Final Fantasy Tactics.

As for DS, I believe it is WII adaptable, and there is always the DSXL if you want a bigger screen.

At the moment I'm just staying true to my PS2, plus I break out the Super NES when I really want to play something classic, like Earthbound.

If screen size is a concern you could always get a DSi-XL. It has dual 4.2" screens, and will prob be the biggest till the 3DS comes out.

If I can't play it on TV, I'm not interested.... le sigh.
