  • Professor is Calling Roll

I am a second semester junior. I am in a class you cannot take until you are a second semester junior, so every person in class has been admitted to a competitive program (with a minimum 3.2 GPA in 60 credits) and passed at least 3 courses in said program.

My professor is CALLING ROLL. For 140ish people. Because attendance is mandatory, because "students who do not attend are not successful." Yeah, because we don't know how to be successful at this point. No clue at all.

We take roll in the class I TA, and it's really improved attendance. But there's also a team of 4 TA's taking the roll, and after a month or so we can do it by sight. Unless your prof is using a seating chart, that's gotta take 5-10 minutes out of class time.

      Hahahahaha.

"Since you haven't been in clinicals..."

Oh, so last semester didn't happen?

Admin--it took 15 minutes because we had to correct mispronunciations and give her our nicknames. There were a few more nicknames given than I remember from last semester, and a few very ethnic names that didn't have nicknames but needed to be repeated several times.

Ok, I can understand taking roll for the purpose of being able to put names with faces and all that. But for a class that size? For cryin' out loud, just pass around a sheet of paper for everyone to write their names on.

Ah, but then someone can write down their buddy's name.
I was in a large section of what amounted to applied philosophy/ethics (it was really kick ass!), and I dodged out on occasions after the roll came my way.
