  • Smallpox Vaccination

Along with a crapload of other shots, I had to get the smallpox vaccination for my job. I guess that was last Tuesday (so about 10 days ago). This crap is really, really itchy. It's driving me insane. I can't wait for it to just drain and scab up. I desperately want to scratch it or pop it and drain it but something tells me that might not be the best of ideas.

Anyone else have to deal with this crap? I'm going nuts with it.

    ..........O.o

    Smallpox?!?

Please tell me you mean Chicken pox.

*reads the Wiki page on the Smallpox vaccine*

Hokay, they do still give it out!! Hoo-whee, I didn't think they did that still after the eradication. Yes, by the looks of it it's still the cowpox virus...the advice on the page is to keep away from the immunocompromised/pregnant as they could get ill with it too. For the itching, uhm you're in America...in the UK we have stuff called Sudocream, a thick white cream in grey tubs that's great for itching. Perhaps there's something similar over the pond?

If by America you mean Afghanistan, yes.

I guess I've been away from CS for too long. Result of not working in customer service in forever plus some other things.

I was told not to put anything on the wound nor to touch it period if I can help it.

Already broke the don't go near babies thing. 14 hour plane ride overseas, I didn't even think about it. Mainly as long as I don't touch it, I won't infect others or other parts of my body.

Don't scratch it! That's BAD because it's a live virus, just hanging out in your arm right now. If you scratch it or break the skin, now you're spreading smallpox everywhere.

My friends who have had tattoos say slapping the itchy area helps a lot. I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not, because you don't want to break the skin.

The good news is that it usually starts scabbing at 12 days, and is much less itchy when that happens.

I find that pressure also helps an itch I can't scratch. Maybe if you lean against a wall or wrap an ace bandage around it?

Try putting some ice on it. I get little hive-like things sometimes; they get really itchy. It's usually a stress thing or a reaction to cold air; ironically, putting ice on it helps.

On a side note, I didn't realize you were over there already! Be safe!

I have to keep it covered with a bandage at all times. Can't wash it in the shower at all.

For itching, I kinda just rub around it over the bandage so I don't actually touch it. I took a couple benadryl and that seems to help with the itching today.

I lost my sunglasses. Expensive pair, plus my mom had given me them for Christmas. She was all upset. I know where I lost them but they were gone as soon as I could get back to the building I lost them in.

To forwarn you, you'll most likely end up w/ a scar from the vaccination. Both of my parents have them.

                  Keep safe!

Corn rings spring to mind - can you use one of those felt corn rings around it? I don't mean for anything other than to try and remind your fingers not to prod.

Yea, I know it scars you. The guy made sure to do it where it wouldn't mess up my tattoo.
