I hear you on the garnet hating. I hate that my birthstone is the color of period blood discharge. For Christmas, my bf wanted to custom design a necklace that had both of our birthstones, and I said absolutely not....why embarrass beautiful Sapphire with such an ugly color like garnet.

I like to wear white sapphires and pink sapphires.

On to the original topic at hand, HELL YES you can wear pearl necklaces. Pearls look great on every woman. They look good on casual and formal attire. Go for it. Pearls are classy and very elegant.

Pearls are sexy-- just do a google search -- and elegant. They go perfectly with your LBD (little black dress that every woman must have-- I don't but I'm still in "high school" stage for my wardrobe -____-' ) You can wear them to funerals as well as weddings, graduations as well as the formal 'welcome to the world baby' party (if they are done in your area of the world...). You know those people (usually rich middle aged/older women, sometimes the men) who wear jewelery with everything, including jean shorts and t-shirts? Pearls would go as much as any of the jewelery they wear. (I don't particularly get that, but I see it in my area and is one of the few indicators that the person you're talking to is actually rich. o_o )
I usually see those pearl-strands being worn by young women when they have nice dresses on, like Jackie O'Nassis-Kennedy would wear. Remember that? (no i am not that old )
I like expensive jewelry, and I am jealous (in a good/don't want to murder you way ), and that creme de menthe emerald? NICE!
In other words, you can wear it with everything, and nothing.
(you just have the ... 'tude to pull it off. that 'je ne sais quoi', that confidence and grace that so many of us don't even try for... that, covered in farm slurry and naked, still allows you to have dignity. Maybe not that much, but confidence. )

I have a rather nice antique faux pearl necklace. It has a weight to it that you don't get in modern fake pearl strands.

I'm fond of opals, moonstones, and tourmalines, myself.

Chiming in to say that I have a bracelet of freshwater pearls and amethyst (got it at the Denver museum) and next to my necklace, it's one of my most favorite pieces of jewelry that I wear.

In my opinion, i think it's more a "50's" genre feel. If you wear 50's style clothing for young ladies with it, i think it looks wonderful. I also think that pearls with wedding dresses are a wonderful thing too.

I don't think it's "old lady" material, i think perhaps it's a genre style. Some can pull off the look VERY nicely. Perhaps it depends on the outfit and not the person.

My "pearls" from my grandmother is actually one of those. I don't wear it much because the outer coating is starting to wear off, and I want to preserve it as long as I can.

Wear what you like. My wife wears pearls all the time.

Pearls are never out of style. Just find a style you like. Personally, I looooove pearls. Any color, any shape, any style. I love pretty much every gem, too, including those dark garnets.

Pearls? Yes, definitely. I have a pretty single strand pearl necklace with pearl drop earings, I think it's a timeless look.
(Btw though, apparently - in England anyway - a pearl necklace has to be either 1 strand or 3. Never 2 strands unless one is of black pearls. Why? No idea!)

can has pics? o-0 I love gems and gemstones. I'm not more into it because then I pout and feel sorry for myself that I can't have pretties. After all, the state I live in is the Gem State!
EDIT: I know why I didn't remember this earlier-- I've gotten out of the habit of jewelery because of where I've worked the past few years and I didn't want men chasing me because it got awkward... but anyway, I have a solitare pearl that I got when I was 10 in Hawaii in those "get your pearl from an oyster" booths they have all over down there (seemingly anyway)-- it's a whale tail (fluke?) and a whitish pearl. Very pretty and simple, perfect for a younger child and laid-back jean wearing.

                        I'm sorry but

Also, teh, I know! And yet no one remembers we're the Gem State. No, no, it's all "oh potatoes" and "haw haw you-da-ho." Also, my birthstone is a lovely, lovely emerald.

Anyway. I think pearls are gorgeous. I don't really like the whole just a strand of pearls, but intermixed with other stuff, I think is beautiful.

I seem to remember that Washington puts out more taters than Idaho! My birthstone is amethyst, which I have zero affinity for. I love hematite, and practically any other gemstone/precious material more than amethyst. sad fax.

I love making pearl jewelry sets - they're just so classy and elegant. I tend to pair the pearls up with swarvoski crystals and it adds just enough flash to make it interesting. I've worn some of my sets with jeans and a t-shirt as well as with skirts and heels. They go with both.

And I'm another one who hates my birthstone - but mine's a diamond. I actually got an emerald for my engagement ring because I like them so much better. I also went for lab-created because it was the only kind I could find with the deep shade of green I wanted.

Oooh pearls and Swarovski! I did a necklace of soft beige-colored pearls with Sw. crystals in a shade called silk, which I adore. Very yummy.

I've got freshwater pearl and emerald swarvoski, amethyst and mother of pearl, and mother of pearl with a kinda champagne colored swarvoski - although I have to say I love my emerald set the most (matches my engagement ring so well). I haven't worn the two mother of pearl sets as I'm debating about selling them since I don't really wear those colors much. I just love making them. I don't think there is any better combo than crystals and pearls.
