I hear you on the garnet hating. I hate that my birthstone is the color of period blood discharge. For Christmas, my bf wanted to custom design a necklace that had both of our birthstones, and I said absolutely not....why embarrass beautiful Sapphire with such an ugly color like garnet.
I like to wear white sapphires and pink sapphires.
On to the original topic at hand, HELL YES you can wear pearl necklaces. Pearls look great on every woman. They look good on casual and formal attire. Go for it. Pearls are classy and very elegant.

-- and elegant. They go perfectly with your LBD (little black dress that every woman must have-- I don't but I'm still in "high school" stage for my wardrobe -____-' ) You can wear them to funerals as well as weddings, graduations as well as the formal 'welcome to the world baby' party (if they are done in your area of the world...). You know those people (usually rich middle aged/older women, sometimes the men) who wear jewelery with everything, including jean shorts and t-shirts? Pearls would go as much as any of the jewelery they wear. Also, my birthstone is a lovely, lovely emerald.
