  • Trying to remember a book...

I'm trying to figure out the name of this book, and my Google-fu is failing me. I remember a teacher reading it to our class in elementary school, so I guess it's probably considered a kids' book or maybe young adult. It was about a guy who went skiing and hunting in some mountains, and was caught in an avalanche. He survived, but was buried alive. His legs were completely trapped in the snow and he couldn't move them, but he did have an air pocket leading to the surface of the avalanche so he could breath. He had killed a couple of quails or partridges and ended up eating some of them raw to try and stay alive. He also tried to keep his legs moving, even though he couldn't feel them and couldn't dig himself out. In the end, he gets rescued and ends up having a couple of his toes amputated due to frostbite, but if he hadn't been doing daily exercises with his legs, he would've had to have his legs amputated.

Sorry the details are sketchy...it was a long time ago that we read it so I don't remember very much. But somehow, parts of it stuck with me so now I'm curious to re-read it if I can.

Well, I found this one: Avalanche

The reviews make it sound like what you were talking about, and it is recommended for 5th-6th graders.
