I'm going old-school. I broke out the Dreamcast and I've been playing Sonic Adventure 2 lately. I've already beaten the game, but I like seeing what kind of Chaos I can raise. As in you feed them certain animals and when they transition from childhood to adulthood, they change color and develop certain abilities.

And I like seeing other Sega icons floating around in the game levels, like pictures of NiGHTS. And one of the boss levels showed a billboard for Phantasy Star Online in the background.

And for a while, I was playing Samurai Warriors in an attempt to get 30 levels into Survival Mode so I could get all the special books that give me an instant kill ability. The only bad thing is I have to defeat Lu Bu from Dynasty Warriors to get the final book. For those who are not familiar with the gSamurai Warriors or Dynasty Warriors series, Lu Bu is the single biggest pain in the ass in pretty much any of Koei's games.

      2gb ram, *snip* Windows XP.
Adequate there, easily. Both our WinXP boxes play just fine with 2 GB.

2ghz single core, 256 ati all-in-wonder, all from about 6 years ago now
I think you're under official specs on both of those. IIRC and could be very wrong, going purely on memory, but 2.7 Ghz is around the lowest you can go for a single core, and I don't know ATI cards too well but pretty sure that's far below. Sorry.

On the Nvidia side of things, a 9500GS can be serviceable with some tweaking, to give you roughly an idea of realistic minimums. Again, no real idea about ATI...sister used a 3870 (I think) and said it was slow as molasses, but she's unwilling to tweak anything down, even if it means single digit framerates.

I have to admit, I'm tempted to set up a Customers Suck Guild in GW, considering how many of us play.

Currently, I'm playing in a tabletop game of Hero System (Champions) set in the DC Universe.

I'm eagerly awaiting news on Diablo 3. I haven't played Diablo 2 in awhile . . . it can suck up too much of my time if I'm not careful.

I figured I'd try a reinstall of Dungeon Keeper 2 over the weekend. Let's just say it didn't go well. (I figure about the only way I'm gonna manage it is to slap on a Win 98 OS into my multi boot, which to be honest is not worth the headache. I would kill for a GoG.com release of it right now...)

                Compat mode didn't work?

Negative. It tended to make things worse.

The best approach (for my rig at any rate. Your mileage may vary, which is why it is such a problem) Was to update to v 1.61 and run with that.

The problem is in XP there's a timing issue which causes the "your standing around doing nothing" message to occur 5 per second. There's a camera snap linked to it so my camera bounces around while trying to do anything.

In Windows 7 it chose to crash after 10 minutes of game play and clicking on just the wrong thing which worked fine just a couple minutes ago. The only consistency would be that clicking the objectives button was guaranteed to crash the game.

Outside of installing it on Windows 95/98/98se, getting a copy working is pretty much hit or miss, mostly miss. And even doing that on current hardware means it's no guarantee, assuming you can find drivers that would work.

I've been playing mostly tabletop stuff at the moment. Pathfinder, 40k, Fantasy, Necromunda, Mordheim, and Bloodbowl all either have games running or projects in the works. I've got Malifaux sitting here collecting dust as well.

electronically I dug out the x-box and am playing a lot of Mech Assault and Morrowind.

What's everyone else playing for recreation? Tabletop, computer, whatever.

Yeah, understand about the driver thing. I had to put XP on my current box since I didn't want to fiddle with all the BS to get 2k Pro working...might have and then again might not.

Which...brings me to one oddball idea. You tried compat, I'm assuming for 9x...did you try 2k also? I've found a few older games were actually happy as a clam with Win2k compat, oddly enough.

Yup, no dice. Compat mode in both XP and Win7 in all incidents cause it to crash out or fail to run.
