Any warhammer folk on here?

My boyfriend plays Warhammer. I believe it's the 40k pack, that's all I know. (not 100% sure, I do know that it's the futuristic one)

Anyway, I have no idea how the game works exactly, apart from the fact that he has millions of tiny models and his wonderful girlfriend behind him.

We've had a few funny moments lately, one of which was a brainburp on my part.

1) Boyfriend has a vampire girl. Basically, it's a skinny vampire with big hips and big boobs. And she's naked. My reponse to the boyfriend was "She needs to be blonde and to have glasses"
2) Boyfriend puts up one of his models on FB stating that he's lacking some parts. To me, the model looked like it had a banner for a head, so I asked him that. He then said "the head's on the backpack". By that point, I was going "Where's the head?" So being the natural smartass, he decides to tag EVERYTHING in that photo. Not just on the model, but the desk around it.

Anyway, how do you play Warhammer? I'm not planning on getting into it, but I'd like to be able to at least understand how to play so I can support the boyfriend.

ETA: I have played Dawn of War on my PC, which does use the Warhammer characters IIRC. I do not consider that to be a proper substitute.

Well, DoW isn't bad for a basic orientation of the more common models (oh! that's a Leeman-Russ battle tank!) but that's about as far as it goes. Closer video game examples to the game play would be a turn based grid style strategy game like Final Fantasy tactics or Disgaea. Couldn't tell you more about it as I don't play it myself. I do know there's some people here that do play and could tell you, though you might also want to ask your boyfriend and smack him every time he tries to be a smart ass.

Warhammer 40K is good fun (well, prior to 5th ed rules. I should not be able to remove half an opponents army in one shot!)

I'm assuming your learing about the background already? The grimdark universe and never ending war etc?
If he is playing 40k it sounds like either Eldar or Chaos is his shtick. I'll keep referencing Space Marines cos they are the Poster boys of 40K, and I play Space Wolves, a variant of them.

Gameplay wise - Its a D6 based game using the stats for each unit. I.e A Space Marine has BS of 4, so needs 3 or better to hit the target. The tables for this are in the rule books.

Keeping armies even for a battle is based on the "Points" for each unit/model. an uber killy death tank like the Land Raider is about 255 points, but for that amount you could get about two 10man squads of space marines or like 3 or 4 squads of dark eldar.
The difference? - Tank - 1 model. Space Marines - 20 models and relatively survivable. Eldar - plenty more troops, but in general if hit they fold like a paper bag.

Movement wise, again their are stats for it. I.e. fast vehicles like a Land Speeder, can move 18 inches (but cannot shoot that turn, too busy piloting) - A space marine squad can walk 6 inches, being on foot, or give up shooting to run, and possibly double that distance.

I guess if you have some more specific answers I can answer as best I can.

Edit - My mention about 5ed - My 90 point dreadnought shot my friends 30 transport, and blew it up. The explosion rolled as 6 inches around the vehicle, and due to his moving/deploying, he was tightly packed in. About half his entire army was taken out that game.

Pshh-- I'm only in the RP; a friend of mine does WH40k with his girlfriend's kids... he's younger than me and is twice said children's ages. He bemoans his lack of money (severe), and his noobishness at it.
That being said, hope he doesn't wrangle you into painting said minis, unless you want to that is. Those bastards look fiddly. o__o
EDIT: I recommend showing up and watching, and asking questions at appropriate/good times, like when rules are being discussed for a move, or reading the core books straight up. I'm sure your passage will be eased by drinks and foods of choice.

I have inquisitor scale minis but no-one I know plays it.

Painting wise. Yes. Yes they are a pain in the ass. Lol. But since they pushed to majority plastic models, repose and getting awesome poses is easier.

Painting I break the models into parts (literally!) then reglue when done.

And yes, they are referred to as plastic crack for a reason, rediculous GW prices.

My friends and I have started playing bootleg Fantasy, and we're looking at getting into 40K. I think the weirdest thing is that of all of us I'm the one least into war and war games, and I have the best win/loss record, I can't remember how many games I've played, but I've only lost one, everybody else is around 50/50, except one friend who's closer to 30/70. It helps that I'm really good with guess range weapons.

For non-40kers - The weapon in that picture has a rule (Background for it is technology is stagnant in 40k, and this particular weapon is unreliable at times) - If a 1 (or a 2 on a double tap shot) is rolled, you have to see if the gun overheating kills the bearer.

The trade off is it will kill or wound pretty much anything other than uber tanks.

I'm a dedicated Mordheimer myself. Fantasy setting, small warbands of between 10 and 15 normally and the chance to upgrade your heroes with skills and new weapons during the campaigns. Also quite cheap comparatively, since not as many models needed, and plenty of scope for creative modelling and painting.

The better half plays Fantasy (Chaos/Vampire Counts) and 40k (Necrons/Blood Angels/Eldar/and his baby The Swarm aka. Tyranids - pretty much the only thing he hasn't done army wise is Imperial Guard) and we usually have at least one day on the weekends where his friends are visiting, taking over our dining room table with their battles.

But Apollo's got the gist covered, though, I do suggest reading the codex books - if for anything the fluff to each army and particular characters are really interesting! I'm not much for playing it myself, more fun for me in assembling and painting the armies. Like Chaos knights who sport various animal heads (horses/wolves/raptors/hawks), or the swan colored Lord of Change.

I play far less than I paint. Then again, that's the status for me with most wargames. I like playing, but I love painting. It's a ton of fun, and there's lots of resources on the net for helping out people getting started.

That being said, I do enjoy playing casually. I'm not into the whole tournament scene.

(And that has to be the best pose for a plasma gunner I've ever seen.)

I've just got into Warhammer Fantasy. I find 40k to be a little un-tactical for my taste.

I play 40K-Black templars, Grey knights, blood angels. Fantasy- Chaos Warriors and Skaven, Mordheim- Witch Hunters and Skaven. Necromunda- Escher and Cawdor. As others have said the best way to learn is to get stuck in and ask questions.
