Be vewwy vewwy careful about reading the 40k lore. Thats how I got sucked in. Now I'm an avid Spacewolf player.

(Very quick and dirty explanation - Space Wolves are the Vikings of 40k. In space. And power armour. And in the new codex, they ride uber-wolves into battle. Whats not to like!)

Painting wise, I enjoy that alot too, so quite often, I'll buy a unit a friend can use, paint it, then give it to them. Apparently my ocd'ness about painting impresses them lol.

Oh Snap, a Warhammer/40K thread that I haven't posted in!

So much that others have already covered, if you want to get into it, if there is a local GW near you, go in and ask for a introductory game and they should let you have a go and go with you and help you play your first match.

Apollo, the sons of Russ are alright, but Ragnar is a bit too mary sue, so is whatshisface, Lukas the Trickster.

I prefer Iron Snakes myself, Space Marine hoplites? Hell yeah.

Read the 40K Lore fire, because unlike water, it's thick, rich and really fun to drown yourself in.

I'd suggest giving painting a go (with your own models you can buy sets of like 3 models for Marines, Chaos and Guard cheaply enough and you dont ruin his) I got my gf to try it and she really likes it, plus she also likes gaming too.

If you ever play Warhammer Fantasy, do not play against a Vampire counts army, frigging corpse carts!!

RayvenQ - I'll agree, Ragnar is meh, although he makes bloodclaws nastier. Lukas I've used once, but the results were funny (I won "last laugh" on a 2 with a bloodthirster)

Lone Wolf units how ever, have become the bane of my friends army. And the Saga's lead to some nice HQ's.

And like Rayven said - Iron Snakes chapter would be my second choice if I made another army. I really liked their novels.

Fire - I'd reccommend some of the standalone novels if you getinto the books, and the codex, to familiarise yourself with terms. Then, hitup the Horus Heresy series.

You know what I like now? Night Lords, Aaron Dembski Bowden has turned me to chaos (plus with him he never describes the stupid bat wing helmets that make going through doorways a nightmare.
