  • anyone ever see one of these strange things

So last year in my four o clocks flowers I seen a furry moth that flaps its wings and has a nose like a hummingbird. Here they are...http://visitwimberley.com/critters/h...birdMoth.shtml

They are strange creatures, I sat for a long time and watch them everyday. Anyone else have them?

Yeah, I see them around the yard pretty much every summer. Wonderful creatures.

Never seen a hummingbird moth around my house (wrong kind of flowers) but I've seen them when we go camping.

          waaaaaaaaaaaaaaah huge buuuuuuuuugggggggssssssssss~~!/whine
ack. Huge bugs, no way. And no one ever believes me when I saw a mosquito the size of a golden retriever either. (No, seriously, right up against our grill on the patio in SD. Size of a dog. Poke me in the eye.)
Granted, this one's purty and doesn't look like it'll eat your soul like the Huntsman or Camel spiders... which really aren't bugs but still mean the same thing...

ok, i'm near phobic of bugs, I've seen some HUGE moths (chillin out on the wall of my porch, wings flat (butterflies rest with wings folded back) wings almost as wide across as my hand is long!) but these look CUTE! I wonder if I've mistaken them for humming birds in the garden...

I've never seen one but OMG that's beautiful!!

What we do have around here are dragonflies the size of a hummingbird. Seriously. It's like Smurf Airlines.

Awww, I wish I had those in my garden! So cool, so pretty, so...FUZZY! I love how moths look like high-fashion ladies wearing fur and velvet cloaks.

I've seen them that size before. They always make me go Ooooohhh purty...and then I remember what they are and get torn between running and watching...

You folks that freak out at the sight of a large moth would freak out if you saw cicadas, cicada killer wasps, some whitetail dragonflies, and polyphemus moths. Some of those moths are bigger than some birds.

I love cicadas. Not for how they look, but the sound...it's one of those things you only hear around here in the summer.

We did have a cecropia moth around here once, years ago. Gorgeous. I'm sure there are more but I've only seen one once.

I love that deafening, eerie whine those things put out. It just sounds like summer to me. Love their hollow exoskeletons abandoned on the pine trees, love their noise, love their weird appearance.

As someone who has a severe mottephobia, they are both beautiful and terrifying to me.

                            But lovely pictures

I hate, hate, HATE cicadas and that damned awful sound they make. ARRGGHHHHH.
