  • Linguistics (my 'major')

I'm at University. I am currently majoring in English, with a Linguistics emphasis (mostly 'cuz MyCollege doesn't have a Linguistics program juuuuuussst yet... getting there tho! )
When I started school more than 4 years ago, I went in for Engineering, because I didn't want to go to school, Mom and Dad 'made' me, I whined about not being challenged, Mom asked what would, I said Math, with horror on my face, Dad said Engineering-- I have testing issues, with math, mostly, apparently-- and I found out the work environment of engineers would drive me insane. So, I looked at what I completed, and it was mostly English classes, with a bunch of French, so, Linguistics ('cuz 2 yrs of a language not English is required. I had 3.)
I've been in since fall of the last school year, and today I got done with a rather large translation project for History of English-- Old English.
It reminded me of why I took foreign languages in the first place: I just love learning about other people-groups, and history, and finding out what they were like! Translation gets you close to people like nothing else.

what area of linguistics? when i was majoring in linguistics (before i switched to nursing), my emphasis was descriptive and historical linguistics, though i was also interested in sociolinguistics and language acquisition. most of my professors were specialists in indigenous american languages, so i got to do a lot of work in indigenous languages, particularly various mayan dialects.

i still love the field, and do a lot of independent research, but ultimately decided it wasn't where i wanted to go professionally. good luck to you, though! it's a very interesting field.

So, you're going to become a cunning linguist are you?

My boyfriend is double majoring in linguistics and philosophy. I still love him, though.

Ooooh! I've an English degree, but was only able to take one very general linguistics course as my University didn't have a linguistics department. Still, I've a long-standing interest in the field. I've a bit of familiarity with Anglo-Saxon/Old-English as I did a report on Piers Plowman my freshman year, although that was actually for a history course. It's amazing how much the language changed with the Norse and then later the Norman French influences.
