  • We'll pay for your ambulance. PSYCHE!

Alright so on February 4, or early February 5 if you would like to look at it that way, I was walking around campus and fell. Now I already told most of the story here, but something has come up and I feel the need to share.

When we were deciding how I was to get to the ER, Campus Enforcement asked if i would like to take a taxi or an ambulance. I said I wanted to take a Taxi, because even though I couldn't walk, I REALLY couldn't afford an ambulance. He, however, told me that I wouldn't have to pay. The university was at fault for my injuries, so he assured me they would pay for the ambulance. When I got back to campus, those officers that helped me back into my Chalet also promised the school would pay for my ambulance. So, I allowed them to call the ambulance. I mean, I couldn't walk, so an ambulance made more sense.

Anyway, yesterday I get a letter from the hospital with the bill for the ER visit and the ambulance. So I naturally sent an e-mail off to housing, explaining that I had gotten the bill. I had mentioned in earlier e-mails that CEP had said the school would cover these costs, and no one had so no, so I thought all would be fine.

Today I received a response. It basically said that the school never pays for ambulances, and never will. They pointed out a lot of people leave in ambulances, but never acknowledge the fact I was hurt due to negligence on the school's part. Something they did touch on in earlier e-mails. They also included a statement from the head of campus enforcement says she herself had never approved the statement that the school would cover the ambulance costs.

Needless to say, I'm pretty pissed off right now.

Yikes . That stinks!. Sadly you might have to get a lawyer, and make sure to add on whatever fees that lawyer has in your suit.

That was a big screwup on the part of that Enforcement Officer. I would recommend talking to someone in the administration part of the college and stressing the fact that you only took the ambulance because the officer said that you wouldn't be charged. It might help your case if you can somehow find out which officer it was (which if they keep activity logs should be doable).

Maybe a politely-worded letter pointing out that your accident was due to their negligence would help....along with a suggestion that a lawyer might see things somewhat differently than they do. Not threatening, just stating your position.

I think you have a case because the officer admitted that the campus was at fault, since they're representing the campus, they've now put the responsibility on it. (That's something you never do at an accident, even if it's only saying 'sorry.' It will really hurt your case) Even if it was, they made a mistake in saying it because now they've opened the door for you to sue them. They should have trained their security better in many ways.
