  • Beerfest? More like Idiotfest.

As some of you may remember, my friend Little Red and I went to the Beerfest in Fort Lauderdale last year. We had such a great time, we had planned to do it again this year, but instead of just going up for two nights, we were going to do 5, making a full vacation out of it.

Now, Beerfest is just for one night, in downtown Lauderdale, but we figured we'd do two nights at the beach and three nights (including Beerfest night, of course) downtown, partying our asses off. And towards that end we made sure that both of our hotels would be close enough to the bars so that no driving would be required.

Great plan. And we were all set for the April Beerfest. And then we discovered that the organizers of Beerfest had actually changed the date to May 14th.

Okay, this is weird, but we can handle this. We shifted our hotel reservations, got great deals on both hotels, both of which were, due to the deal, nonrefundable. And in actuality, May worked better for both myself and Little Red. So we were all jazzed about it and ready to go!

And then....the fuckers changed it again. This festival is not something new. They've put it on for the last 13 years. But now they've got it in their heads that they need to get a "national act" performing at the festival, so to accommodate said act, they shifted the date of Beerfest again.

    To Novermber 12.

Yes, that's right--they actually changed the timing of their festival from the original date by seven months just so they could get a big name band performing at it. Ignoring the fact that some people had already made reservations, some of which were nonrefundable. Ignoring the fact that some people had made plans around the festival that were now fucked. Ignoring the simpler issue of the very simple fact that people are not going to Beerfest for the fucking music, they're going to Beerfest for the BEER. If I wanted to see a big name act while drinking beer, I would go to the concert of a big name act....and drink beer at the concert.

I have made my very strong opinions about all of this clear to the organizers (I use that word loosely, as they don't seem all that organized, or have a clue as to how to organize something), but to date have received no response and no explanation for why they felt the need to so completely screw around with this.

Little Red and I will not be attending the November 12 Beerfest for a few reasons. One is because that weekend happens to be Powerboat Race weekend in Key West, and we are NOT missing out on that very lucrative week. Another reason is we don't want to wait another six months for this vacation. And the most obvious reason is because our hotel reservations are nonrefundable.

So we are still going, festival or not. We plan on making our own damn Beerfest. We're going to go to beer bars and perhaps even do a brewery tour or two. We're going to have our vacation, with or without the cooperation of the Keystone Kops organizing Beerfest.

    Idiots. Fucking idiots.

Why the hell would they hold a beerfest in November? November sucks. It's cold. A beerfest should be when it's warm out and you can actually enjoy bar hopping.

Green, it's Fort Lauderdale. While it will certainly be cooler, with a chance of being cold, in all likelihood it won't be all that cold there on November 12.

Maybe there are enough disappointed people out there that you can arrange an UnBeerFest?

I dunno about an UnBeerFest, but in semi-related news, a friend of mine and I are planning to organize a Craft Crawl here in Key West. Basically a pub crawl of some of the bars down here that offer craft beers. It will be a small crawl, a dozen people or less, but it should be fun.

As will our own personal Beer Fest in Lauderdale in May.

It's probably just as well you're not going. With that kind of (dis)organization, they'll probably forget to obtain the beer.

Well, they certainly had no issue with that last year!
