  • If you don't know what you're doing....

Don't do it at all. So yesterday I was watching animal cops San Francisco and there was a case of this neighborhood stray cat, everyone just take care of it. Well it started shaking and throwing up, it couldn't even stand up. The woman tell the animal cops that she had took it upon herself to treat the cat for fleas. Well they ran tests and done xrays.
They finally looked at the flea treatment box that the woman had given them. It was for dogs and big dogs at that. It was for 60 to 90 pound dogs, so she poisoned the cat. So they gave the cat fluids and such and now he is fine. But really I know she meant well but if you don't know what you're doing, please don't do it. I read a article in the local newspaper last summer that said that a lot of pets end up in the hospital cause owners think oh I'll just use any old flea stuff, its all the same.
Also it said that owners don't pay much attention to the weight requirements on the front of the box. It was more or less a warning to be careful with flea products.

That was something that I had to frequently explain to former clients. Sometimes it was hard to gently explain that cats are very sensitive to medication and that more=/=better when it comes to flea treatment. I also used have to work out and write down the varying doses for multi-dog and multi-cat families so that they didn't have to buy lots of different expensive spot-on treatments*. I used to feel so stupid explaining and demonstrating that the blunt 16g needle+syringe was not for injection, it was for drawing the dose of flea treatment out of the ampoule easily...right up until one of the other staff members forgot to explain it and we had one very angry, very scratched/bitten person who 'couldn't use the fucking useless needle you bastards' threatening to sue.

*My former boss is a good vet and a nice guy. Since that brand was all the same strength but varying doses, he used to get us to explain to people how they can save money by buying the larger dog version and safely using the ampoules for multiple doses.

I'd love to do it that way.

One dog, two cats of very different sizes. We're buying 'small dog', 'large cat' and 'small cat/kitten' ampoules.
